SSN Species Fact Sheets - Defenders of Wildlife   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-17)
Sawfish use their distinctive, tooth-studded rostral saw to capture prey, slashing through schools of fish or rooting along the sea floor for invertebrates.
The Order Pristiformes is comprised of only two genera, Anoxypristis and Pristis.
Their rostral saws are sold for traditional medicines in Asia and as curios elsewhere, the fins are sold as shark fin, and their liver oils are used for cosmetics, medicines, lubricants, and soaps.

Nearly all the families, most genera, and numerous species are shared between these two areas; two closely related families, Rainbowfishes (Melanotaeniidae) and Blue-eyes (Pseudomugilidae) are unique to the combined region.
The freshwater fishes are mainly derived from marine ancestors belonging to the orders Pristiformes, Clupeiformes, Siluroidiformes, Beloniformes, Syngnathiformes, Mugiliformes, Perciformes and Pleuronectiformes.
The country completely lacks fish belonging to the true freshwater fishes of Southeast Asia, the saltwater barrier demarcated by Wallace's line forming an insurmountable obstacle to their eastward progress (Munro, 1967; Allen, 1991).

 Safe Passing - Government Documents
The effective date of the sturgeon proposal was amended to April 1, 1998, to allow enough time for identification techniques to be refined and made operational.
The proposal to include all sawfishes (Pristiformes) in Appendix I encountered bloc opposition from Parties concerned about CITES involvement in marine species issues and was defeated.
The United States was persuaded by arguments from other Parties that, in light of the endemic status of the alligator snapping turtle (Macroclemys temminckii) and timber rattlesnake (Crotalus horridus) in the United States and apparently low levels of international trade in both species, the conservation value of an Appendix II listing was questionable.
