Pritchardia remota (loulu) Pritchardia remota, a member of the palm family (Arecaceae), is a tree 4 to 5 m (13 to 16 ft) tall with a ringed, wavy trunk about 15 cm (5.9 in) in diameter.
Pritchardia remota is the only species of Pritchardia on Nihoa and can be distinguished from other species in the genus by its wavy leaves; short, hairless inflorescences; and small, round fruits (Read and Hodel 1999; 61 FR 43178).
Pritchardia remota has been recommended as a replacement because it is believed to be closest to the species of Pritchardia that once was present on the island.

Pritchardia remota is unusual among Hawaiian members of the genus in that it occurs in the relatively dry climate found on Nihoa.
The threats to Pritchardia remota on the island of Nihoa are competition with alien plants, seed predation by rodents, possibly alien insects, fire, human disturbances, a risk of extinction from naturally occurring events (such as landslides), and reduced reproductive vigor due to the small number of extant individuals (USFWS 1998d).

The Genus Pritchardia (Family Arecaceae) consists of about 25 species of fan palms found on tropical Pacific Ocean islands in Fiji, Samoa, Tonga, Tuamotus, and Hawai‘i;.
The flowers and subsequent fruit are borne in a terminal cluster with simple or compound branches of an arcuate or pendulous inflorescence that (in some species) is longer than the leaves.
Nineteen taxa of Pritchardia are endemic to the Hawaiian Islands.

 PACSOA - Pritchardia viscosa
Pritchardia viscosa, a member of the palm family (Arecaceae), is a small tree 3 to 8 m (10 to 26 ft) tall.
This species differs from others of the genus that grow on Kauai by the degree of hairiness of the lower surface of the leaves and main axis of the flower cluster, and length of the flower cluster (Read and Hodel 1999).
Pritchardia viscosa is threatened by Psidium cattleianum and non-native grasses, such as Paspalum conjugatum ; and seed predation by rats.

 PACSOA - Pritchardia Overview
The first comprehensive work covering the genus was the monograph Pritchardia, Beccari and Rock, 1921, but a lack of precision and ignorance of the degree of variation within the species in this and other early work lead to over description.
Pritchardia are erect, solitary medium sized unarmed monoecious fan palms up to 40 metres tall, (such as P.
A palm may be easily recognisable as a Pritchardia but the species are variable and also prone to hybridisation when grown in company with cogeners and for this reason identification of any given plant away from its original habitat may be difficult.

Threats to Pritchardia affinis include development, competition from invasive plant species, and animals such as rats and feral pigs, which eat the fruits, seeds, and young plants.
A program protecting and restoring populations of Pritchardia affinis is currently being implemented by government agencies and botanical gardens in Hawaii.

Here, while the Service cites cases of past vandalism, disturbance or collection involving the three Pritchardia species, these unfortunate incidents occurred without any critical habitat designated, and there is no evidence that designation would increase the degree of such threat to the species, as the regulations require.
Finally, the Service's claim that critical habitat would not benefit the Pritchardia species because, allegedly, there are no federal actions likely to trigger section 7 consultation in areas where these plants are found ignores the significant federal presence on Kaua`i and Ni`ihau.
For example, the revised proposal states that the two remaining individual Pritchardia aylmer-robinsonii are found on Ka`ali Cliff on Ni`ihau, at an elevation between 70 and 270 meters.

In the May 28 proposal, we proposed that critical habitat was not prudent for two [[Page 39628]] species of the native palm, Pritchardia affinis and Pritchardia schattaueri, because it would increase the threat of vandalism or collection of those species on the island of Hawaii.
Critical habitat was not proposed for seven species (Cenchrus agrimonioides, Ctenitis squamigera, Hedyotis cookiana, Mariscus pennatiformis, Phlegmariurus mannii, Phyllostegia parviflora, and Plantago princeps), which no longer occur on the island of Hawaii, because we were unable to identify any habitat essential to their conservation on the island.
However, no additional information was provided during the comment periods that demonstrates that the threats to Pritchardia affinis and Pritchardia schattaueri from vandalism or collection would not increase if critical habitat were designated for these species on the island of Hawaii.
