Telephone exchange - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
To help automate service to manual offices during the transition to dial service, a special type of switchboard, which would display the number dialed by the customer, was used.
Telephone switches are usually owned and operated by a telephone service provider or "carrier" and located in their premises, but sometimes individual businesses or private commercial buildings will house their own switch, called a PBX, or Private Branch Exchange.
These devices are used to provide service where existing copper facilities have been exhausted or by siting in a neighborhood, can reduce the length of copper pairs, enabling digital services such as ISDN or DSL.

Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) Overview
Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) is comprised of digital telephony and data-transport services offered by regional telephone carriers.
Beyond the TE1 and TE2 devices, the next connection point in the ISDN network is the network termination type 1 (NT1) or network termination type 2 (NT2) device.

With the emergence of multimedia on packet networks, traditional telephone services are being developed for H.323 IP multimedia telephony networks.
The peer-to-peer model reduces the dependence on the network to routing the signals and data; this is in sharp contrast to the traditional telephony switch model.
The multi-tier approach of designing services allows for complex services to be easily developed using building blocks consisting of simple services.

Dictionary of Computers - Integrated Services Digital Network
It involves converting the 'local loop' – the link between the user's telephone (or private automatic branch exchange) and the digital telephone exchange – from an analogue system into a digital system, thereby greatly increasing the amount of information that can be carried.
Its adoption in the UK is expected to stimulate the use of data-communications services such as faxing, teleshopping, and home banking.
New services may include computer conferencing, where both voice and computer communications take place simultaneously, and videophones.

Although ISDN offers a completely different method for organizing information being transported from point to point, (that is, the use of a digital signal vs. an analog signal) one of its major strengths is its compatibility with much of the in-place international telephone/communications infrastructure.
The National ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) Council (NIC) has been formed to support the development of ISDN services that require network connectivity, compatibility and integrity on a nationwide basis, and for which uniformity of operation is necessary from the customer's viewpoint to render the service usable on an efficient basis
