		A Private Member's Bill is a proposed law introduced by a backbench member of parliament, whether from the government or the opposition side, to that legislature or parliament.
		Note that a Private Member's Bill should not be confused with a private bill; Private Members' Bills are in fact public bills.
		In contrast, Ireland's parliament, the Oireachtas Éireann, rarely passes Private Members Bills, with the overwhelming number of Bills being passed all being introduced by members of the Irish government.

	Parental Discipline Bill
		The Bill sets out the common ground between those who want to retain smacking and those that want it abolished, Mr Smith said - namely that genuine child abuse should be a criminal offence and that people who abuse their children should be convicted of assault.
		Thus the purpose of this Bill is to ensure that section 59 is not used successfully as a defence for the physical abuse of children, while upholding the ability of parents to use physical force to discipline their children when appropriate.
		Clause 6 and Part 2 of this Bill provide a clear signal to parents and persons in the place of parents that the physical abuse of children is unacceptable, by stiffening penalties and amending sentencing principles for child abuse-type offences.

		Liberal Democrat peer, Lord Redesdale introduced his bill to try to end some of the current barriers faced by those wishing to switch to renewably generated energy, and Mike Weir SNP MP for Angus, introduced a bill to boost the use of renewable sources for generating heat.
		Mike Weir's bill would increase the use of renewable fuel crops such as wood and straw, and would harness sources such as solar power and ground heat, and is supported by Friends of the Earth, the National Farmers Union and the Woodland Trust.
		The Bill would provide an incentive for schools, hospitals hotels and farmers to install their own small scale units such as wood burners, ground heat pumps, or straw fired heating.

	Act to Revoke the Conviction of Louis Riel
		The members of the Standing Committee on Procedure and House Affairs representing the Liberal Party of Canada and the Reform Party joined forces and decided that this bill was not votable, despite the fact that a number of government members welcomed it enthusiastically.
		The preamble of this bill states that Louis David Riel, Member of the House of Commons for the electoral district of Provencher from 1873 to 1874, was convicted on August 1, 1885 of high treason, sentenced to death, and was hanged on November 16, 1885, at Regina, North West Territories.
		This bill, along with the motion tabled in November 1989 by the New Democratic member for Comox-Alberni, Robert Skelly, to recognize Louis Riel as a Father of Confederation, shared the unfortunate fate of previous attempts.

		It was a 'private' members bill which never pass unless the whole house supports them such as the anti-smoking legislation.
		The Marriage Amendment Act passed 6 years ago, it was a private member's bill, and it was not supported by the "whole house." Mr Smoker (oh, smokers are so evil –and you claim to be a libertarian?!) was not there, btw.
