Private Snafu is the title character of a series of fl-and-white American instructional cartoon shorts produced between 1943 and 1945 during World War II.
Most of the Private Snafu shorts are educational, and although The War Department had to approve the storyboards, the Warner directors were allowed great latitude in order to keep the cartoons entertaining.
The name "Private Snafu" comes from the military acronym SNAFU, an acronym for "Situation Normal: All Fucked (or Fouled) Up." This was deemed too-strong language even for their target audience, so the opening narrator merely hinted at its meaning: "Situation Normal All...

Snafu (which was a play on the soldiers acronym for Situation Normal All Fouled/F***ed Up) was a soldier who rarely, if ever, did anything right, and his mistakes were used to get across serious points in a humorous way.
Some of the Snafu shorts had scripts written by Ted Geisel (a/k/a Dr. Seuss), and W. Munro Leaf, who was in the Army at that time, is known to have collaborated on at least one Snafu short with Geisel.
Standards were a little looser for the Snafu shorts; given their target audience, more cheesecake shots (the pinup used to hatch pigeon eggs in Three Brothers or the sexy Nazi spy in Spies) and more risque humor and dialogue, including a few four letter words like damn and hell were used.

Private Snafu has two brothers, Tarfu ("Things Are Really 'Fouled' Up") and Fubar ("'Fouled' Up Beyond All Recovery").
The majority of the 28 Snafu films were made at Warner Bros. under the direction of such luminaries as Chuck Jones (Road Runner, Pepe LePew), Friz Freleng (Speedy Gonzales, Yosemite Sam) and Bob Clampett (Tweety Bird, Beany & Cecil); but the Army spread the work among other studios as well.
And when Jessica Rabbit used the pun "booby trap", she got a slight smile; but the same pun, when it was used as the title of a Private Snafu cartoon, might have brought on shocked outrage if seen by a general audience.

I was watching a video on Private SNAFU called THe Cartoons Go To War and it was intresting.
I saw eBay auctions for 16mm SNAFU and I know they wern't shown in TV back in the kinescope days (or did they?) and the transfers in circulation looks like it's a 16mm print.
Bosko Video did a full collection of the SNAFU shorts (INCLUDING the unreleased films) that was transferred to DVD about 6 years ago.

Yes, there are some transfer problems (mostly cropped images) but the historical value of these cartoons, as well as their comedic value, is immense, and I for one am more than willing to overlook the technical glitches.
Again, the toons are GREAT (and i´m generally not a big Looney Toons fan), but the dvd is really lousy.
Overall a great CD, but I was very disappointed that Coming Home and Secrets of the Caribbean (the two unreleased Snafu cartoons) were not included.
