Private overprints are overprints (pictures, text, or a combination of the two), rubberstamped or applied by some other method, to postage stamps (or, occasionally, postal stationery) used by some person or entity other than a government or other official stamp-issuing entity.
For instance, German sympathisers in the Sudetenland privately overprinted Czechoslovakian stamps with swastikas before the annexation, and in Italy, after the fall of Mussolini and his establishment of the Italian Social Republic, stamps of the King were overprinted with fasces by Fascist sympathizers.
A private overprint exists on the Florida commemorative, and during the Vietnam War, a woman privately overprinted the stamps on her outgoing mail with the slogan "Pray for War" before postal authorities compelled her to move this stamping away from the stamps.

An overprint is the addition of text (and sometimes graphics) to the face of a postage stamp after it has been printed.
Overprints have occasionally been used on currency such as the overprints found on Haitian Gourdes at the end of the Baby Doc Duvalier regime.
The overprint was placed over the image of Baby Doc and his father the infamous Papa Doc, François Duvalier that was subsequently replaced with images of figures from the history of the Haitian Republic.

This list is the first serious attempt to catalogue all the privately overprinted cards which exist on the New Zealand Phonecard Market since the landmark `Standard Catalogue of New Zealand Phonecard Overprints' published by W. Ray Dobson in 1993.
It is often not realised that most overprints were produced in very limited quantities and generally sold out within a few days of issue onto a volitile market (in 1993 and 1994 when most were produced) which saw stocks scattered to the four winds.
Often these overprinted cards were purchased by the public as novelties.

Some other countries have overprinted postal matter other than stamps, and so only appear under Revenues (eg Barbados, Jamaica, Solomons, Trinidad and Tobago), Stationery (eg Gold Coast), and Postal Orders (many countries, including New Zealand, South Africa etc).
Not included on these pages are the large numbers of private overprints applied to the margins of stamps and miniature sheets, or the covers of stamp booklets, purely for souvenir purposes by event organisers or philatelic speculators.
Some stamps do not have overprints, but look as if they do.
