The Federal Government has provoked sharp criticism from nurses after giving a private university a cash handout while allowing Sydney University's nursing faculty to fall under the axe.
The NSW Nurses Association condemned the Government for the loss of 3100 places with the closure - expected to be made official at a university senate meeting tomorrow - while bankrolling a new Catholic university campus down the road.
Although the university is private, the Government will provide funding for 200 places and deliver a $4 million cash injection for "campus development".

Angry nurses have attacked the Federal Government after a private university was yesterday promised a cash handout only months after Sydney University's nursing faculty was told it would be axed.
But the secretary of the Nurses Association, Brett Holmes, said if the Government was serious about boosting nursing numbers it should put pressure on Sydney University not to close its faculty or increase places at the already established school at the nearby University of Technology.
Mr Holmes said that "well-established universities" should instead receive the funding and the University of Sydney should face pressure to reverse a plan to transfer its undergraduate nursing program to the University of Technology, Charles Sturt University, and the Australian Catholic University - all of which developed the proposal with the University of Sydney.
