Love on the water | Features | Guardian Unlimited Film
Jean Vigo was the offspring of a liaison between Almereyda (still only 20) and Emily Clero, older and herself a militant anarchist.
Vigo was born in a wretched attic, surrounded by hungry cats.
Jean Daste played the skipper and, for Jules, Vigo hired Michel Simon, largely on the strength of Simon's performance in Renoir's Boudu Sauvé des Eaux (it's the film about a tramp rescued from the Seine by a middle-class gentlemen, whose life is turned upside-down by Boudu's riotous instincts).

 Jean Vigo
As bold in its formal experimentation as it is in its gleefully morbid fascination with ugliness, the grotesque humour of its portraits of the holidaymakers that swarm over the Promenade des Anglais (sometimes suggestively intercut with shots of animals!) is brutally undercut by images of distressing poverty.
Vigo stands apart from any cinematic tradition, a political and artistic rebel who lived and worked in poverty on the margins of the film industry.
Among contemporary French directors, Léos Carax paid Vigo tribute at the end of Les amants du Pont Neuf (1991) when the drowning lovers of the title are fished out of the Seine by an elderly couple on a barge, presumably the skipper and his wife from L'Atlante grown old.

Vigo est mort sans avoir vu son oeuvre finalisée, étant alité depuis le début du montage de celle-ci.

Prix Jean Vigo - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Prix Jean Vigo is an award in the Cinema of France given annually since 1951 to a French film director in homage to Jean Vigo.
The new award aims to strengthen both the spirit which inspired the festival in the first place and its commitment to the work of Jean Vigo.
The Festival took its name, Punto de Vista (Point of View), as a tribute to Vigo, the first director to refer, back in the 30’s, to a “documented point of view” as a distinctive sign of a form of filmmaking which commits the filmmaker.

Winners of the Prix Jean Vigo include "Who Are You, Polly Maggoo?" (1965), by William Klein.
