Procol Harum - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Procol Harum are an English progressive rock band, formed in the 1960s.
Procol Harum produced a unique sound that emphasized Brooker's melancholy vocals and an evocative mix of his eclectic piano, Fisher's elegant, church-like organ, and Trower's searing guitar licks, along with frequent fl humour and a penchant for unpredictable experimentation.
Musically, Procol Harum was split during all these years between Trower's guitar-driven blues rock style (that was often compared to Eric Clapton or Hendrix) and Brooker's structured classical rock sound.

In England, Procol Harum Live: In Concert With the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra only rose to number 48 in May of 1972, but it was competing with a reissue of the group's debut album (retitled A Whiter Shade of Pale, with the single added) paired with A Salty Dog, which outperformed it considerably, reaching number 26.

Robbie Robertson once commented on Procol Harum "I’ve heard vaguely a few records by them, and they’re still singing that same song." There obviously was a certain tonal sameness to some of the material on the first few Procol Harum albums, but, regardless, their career, arguably, may have finally outshined The Band’s career.
Procol Harum played with finesse, and there is something honorable about their will to be singular.

Procol Harum were not technically perfect, and their lyrics had meaning.
One interesting thing about Procol is that throughout the whole decade of their existence, they only released one single LP live record, and even that one was more of a 'creative experiment' than a true picture of their live show.
On the other hand, Trower's solo career is so distinct and different from the classic Procol sound, and his audiences were always so very different from the Procol audiences, that I preferred to dump all of his solo stuff, some of which is quite worthy but much of which is so-so, on his solo page.

I mean, while I sorely lament the death of Procol Harum's "pure," "organic" keyboard interplay that came from the mix of the Hammond and Piano, Solley's synths are used fairly sparingly, and don't really affect the album one way or the other.
Yes, Procol Harum decided it was time for one more stab at epic bombast, and while I've never been that much of a fan of In Held Twas in I, it's a friggin' masterpiece compared to The Worm and the Tree.
Why Procol Harum decided to rise from the dead twelve years after their "comeback" is beyond me, but I'm rather glad they did - at least now they have a chance to end on a decent note, rather than on that Prodigal Stranger garbage.

Procol Harum's signature symphonic rock lends itself *perfectly* to orchestral occompanyment, so it was only fitting that the band would play a concert with a full symphony orchestra and choir.
The resulting live album, "Live With The Edmonton Symphony Orchestra," shows not only what a powerhouse Harum are live in concert, but how beautifully rich and textured their music is as a whole, a point that the brilliant orchestrations on this album help to drive home.
Unlike much of todays modern rock, Procol Harum's music draws on the details of sound--the careful placings of just the right intervals, with just the right inversions.
