Procyonidae - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Procyonidae is a family of Carnivora which includes the raccoons, coatis and others.
The status of the various olingos is disputed: they may all be better regarded as subspecies of Bassaricyon gabbi.
Because of their general build, the Procyonidae are often viewed as smaller cousins of the bear family.

Bear - Open Encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Although bears are often described as having evolved from a dog-like ancestor, their closest living relatives are the pinnipeds (walruses, seals, and sea lions).
Others place it with the racoons in Procyonidae or in its own family, the Ailuridae.
The many similarities between the two pandas are thought to represent convergent evolution for feeding primarily on bamboo.

 Red Panda (Ailurus fulgens)
Like the giant panda, scientists are not sure where to classify the red panda.
It has similarities to both Procyonidae (raccoons) and Ursidae (bears).
Currently it is classified as Ursidae though some scientists believe it should have its own family.

Procyonidae: Mike Farabee, a biology instructor at Estrella Mountain Community College in Avondale, Arizona, wrote a paper in 1998 entitled
In the paper, he discusses using cladistics, an organism classification method based on using shared characters instead of overall similarity, on the pandas.
This method placed the giant panda in the Ursidae group and the red panda in the Procyonidae group.

 [No title]
The earlier rationale for including Ailurus in the Procyonidae was based largely on superficial similarities with Procyon.
However, recent morphological analyses indicates Ailurus to be an early ursid outgroup which retains conservative characteristics of the early ursid/procyonid ancestral stock and Procyon to be among the most highly derived of true procyonids.
The Procyonidae and Ailurus also differ significantly in important aspects of their biology (especially ecological and feeding adaptations) and thus will be treated separately in this review.

 Procyonidae Skulls from Skulls Unlimited
The Procyonidae family consists of 19 species including raccoons, ringtails, coatimundis, olingos, the lesser panda and the kinkajou.
Procyonids are omnivorous, feeding primarily on small vertebrates, insects, crustaceans, fruit and berries.
All procyonids use plantigrade locomotion, in that, they walk on the flat sole of their foot as opposed to faster digitigrade species that walk on their toes (deer, antelope, dogs, cats, etc.) All Procyonidae belong to the Order Carnivora.
