Some films include a credit "Presented by", or "presents", which indicates the person is an executive producer as opposed to someone who appears in the film.
A producer is responsible for raising funding, hiring key personnel, and arranging for distributors.
AKA: PM Reporting to the film's producer, this person supervises the budget, hires the crew, approves purchase orders & time cards, and generally makes sure all departments are doing their respective jobs within the parameters of the budget.

Record producer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the first half of the 20th century, the record producer's role was comparable to that of a film producer, in that the record producer organised and supervised recording sessions, paid technicians, musicians and arrangers, and sometimes chose material for the artist.
Until the 1960s most producers and AandR directors were salaried staff on the payroll of major record labels, and most recordings were made at studios owned and operated by major record labels, such as the famous EMI Abbey Road Studios in London.
These producers now typically carried out most or all of these various tasks themselves, including selecting and arranging songs, overseeing sessions (and often engineering the recordings) and even writing the material (or at least claiming songwriting credits).

Executive Producer: In major productions, usually a representative, if not the CEO, of a motion picture production company that is producing a film, although the title may be given as an honorarium to a major investor.
Producer: the "classic" definition of producer who typically has the greatest involvement and oversight among a film's various producers.

The Film Producer by FilmMakers Magazine
If, on the other hand, the producer is always on the set and is making himself known to the crew, they are more apt to treat the producer as one of their own, even opening up and expressing concerns to the producer which otherwise may go unspoken.
The producer is very often treated like the middleman between the crew and the director, cinematographer, etc. They will also receive many suggestions and insights from the crew that may prove lucrative in the filmmaking process.
The producer may work with the director on the editing and some of the composing of the final picture, but in general the director, editor and composer work together on the final cut.

 Producer in Television
Conventional wisdom in the industry consequently labels television "the producer's medium"--in contrast to film, where the director is frequently regarded as the key formative talent in the execution of movie.
Other producers are more intimately involved in the details of each episode, participating actively in screenwriting, set designs, casting and--like James Burrows--serving as a frequent director for their programs.
As with many commercial artists, then, the television producer's scope of innovation is generally delimited by convention, and often amounts to a variation in formula rather than a dramatic break with practices or expectations held by the industry or the producer's audiences (Newcomb and Alley, 1983; Selnow and Gilbert, 1993).

Often a producer's work results in a signature style or "sound"; if this sound is especially novel or musically persuasive, top recording artists may energetically seek the producer out.
A few producers, such as Quincy Jones, have even issued albums under their own names, taking to its ultimate realization the idea of the producer as actual musician.
Producers, especially in the country and randb genres, also still perform their original function of matching artists and repertoire, selecting songs from among those presented by publishers and songwriters, and distributing them to best advantage among the stable of artists with whom the producer works.

 FilmMakers Magazine: The Film Producer
Producing on the other hand is a different story, and adding titles such as associate, executive and supervising just make it even more confusing.
Because producers are essentially supervisors at whatever level they produce, there is no union or guild that governs the jurisdiction of producing like what is seen in other professions such as writing, directing or acting.
For those that actively produce, this can mean any number of activities including but not limited to: hiring the writer to write the original screenplay, selling the script to a studio, signing the major actors, doing the budget, hiring the crew, and making sure the set gets made on time.
