Topic: Product Lifecycle Management

  Product Lifecycle Management
Product lifecycle management, sometimes "product life cycle management", represents an all-encompassing vision for managing all data relating to the design, production, support and ultimate disposal of manufactured goods.
PLM concepts were first introduced where safety and control have been extremely important, notably the aerospace, medical device, military and nuclear industries.
PLM can be thought of as both (a) a repository for all information that affects a product, and (b) a communication process between product stakeholders: principally marketing, engineering, manufacturing and field service.

Whether responsible for product, infrastructure or supply chain lifecycle management processes, the processes are accountable to the enterprise for performance to the firm for the total lifecycle, including the planning, forecasting, commitment, development and retirement of its elements, reporting performance and taking action.
Lifecycle Management processes are called lifecycle because these processes manage the life, from creation to retirement, of either a product, a supplier or an infrastructure element.
The management of the ongoing lifecycle of a product, a supplier or an infrastructure element is, and was in the TOM, represented by the processes that are planning, forecasting and commitment oriented.

Product lifecycle management - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Product lifecycle management (PLM) is the process of managing the entire lifecycle of a product from its conception, through design and manufacture, to service and disposal.
Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) is more to do with managing descriptions and properties of a product through its development and useful life, mainly from a business/engineering point of view; whereas Product life cycle management (PLC) is to do with the life of a product in the market with respect to business/commercial costs and sales measures.
PLM should not be seen as a single software product but a collection of software tools and working methods integrated together to address either single stages of the lifecycle or connect different tasks or manage the whole process.

 PLM - Product Lifecycle Management
A complete PLM project will touch almost every part of an organisation in one way or another, since the intention is to control and distribute information to the individuals who require it.
Many organisations have already taken their first steps to complete PLM by the nature of the fact that they have implemented a CAD system and are using some form of data management, though initially only to manage the files form the CAD system itself.
The next steps may be as simple as to manage other product development documentation or to open up the visibility of CAD data to a wider audience across the enterprise through the use of a lightweight viewer.
