Many of those professionals resented that they were viewed as second-class citizens by country club members who employed them and tournament officials who displayed respect for amateur competitors but at best tolerance toward the pros because they had to work for a living in golf.
In March, a letter was sent out by the committee to club professionals around the country outlining the rules and classifications and purpose of the PGA of America, and requesting that the pros submit applications to join the new organization.
