Academic degree - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A degree is any of a wide range of status levels conferred by institutions of higher education, such as universities, normally as the result of successfully completing a program of study.
As study in the arts or in grammar was a necessary prerequisite to study in subjects such as philosophy, medicine and law, the degree of doctor assumed a higher status than the master's degree.

Professional Master's degree - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Professional Master's degrees are awarded by a university and require that a candidate already has been awarded a first degree, normally a bachelor's degree to matriculate into the program.
The common theme shared by all professional master's degrees is that the education provides a balance between theory and practical skills, so that graduates from these programs are capable of working in the respective fields.
Most professional master's degrees are terminal in the sense that they are not generally used as an intermediate step to the research oriented doctorate degree in the field, though this is not always the case.

In an effort to bridge the gap between professional and nonprofessional disciplines, it may be that the new paradigm of graduate education is the first professional degree-a highly differentiated degree whose content and structure are based on more utilitarian and measurable objectives and directed toward more immediate outcomes that reflect contemporary societal values.
In graduate and professional education, the master's degree has received little attention, but recent research indicates that neither reputational ranking nor quantitative assessments are adequate and that multidimensional indicators are needed to assess this level of degree.
A concerted effort is needed to focus on the master's degree-its academic strengths and weaknesses, its diffuse character, and its importance in the hierarchy of degrees.
