Professional tournaments are ranked according to their level of importance to players and to fans.
In all tournaments, the tournament reserves a number of 'wild-card' places in the draw for players that they want to place in the draw who would not otherwise qualify to play based on their rank or ability.
As professional tennis players are forced to tour the world as individuals to compete in events, there is no opportunity of generating a 'local' fan base that will turn out to see 'their' home team or sporting hero compete locally against visiting opponents as is the case with football and other team sports.
