Professor Alison Richard was installed as the 344th Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cambridge on 1 October 2003.
She was appointed full professor in 1986, chairing the Department of Anthropology at Yale from 1986 to 1990, and later serving as Director of the Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History, where she oversaw one of the most important university natural history collections in the USA.
At Cambridge, Professor Richard has launched an ambitious fundraising campaign for £1 billion to underpin and augment core expenditure, introduced new measures for the stewardship of the University's investments, and developed a bursary fund to ensure that undergraduate students and applicants are not disadvantaged by the national introduction of higher university tuition fees.

Professor¹ Alison Fettes Richard (born 1 March 1948 in Kent, United Kingdom) is the current Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cambridge.
Richard was an undergraduate at Newnham College, Cambridge, before gaining a PhD at the University of London, and went on to have an academic career in Physical Anthropology with a specialisation in the lemurs of Madagascar.
Alison Richard gained her Professorship at Yale, not Cambridge, and University statutes indicate that she is not strictly entitled to use the title in office.

She replaces Professor Sir Alec Broers, whose attempt to modernise Cambridge's labyrinthine decision-making structures suffered defeats at the hands of rebels in Regent House, as the university's parliament of academics is known.

It is encouraging to learn (from a Cambridge webpage) that she has a doctorate in primate biology and "is widely known for her research into the evolution of complex social systems among primates." On the other hand, she appears not to entertain petitions via email, as no email address is provided.
Many aspects of contemporary society are undermining the very foundations of the democratic polity:...the disenchantment of many people with party politics (but not with politics per se, as demonstrated by mass social movement activity of both Left and Right), and the trivialisation of the media.
