  Profiler: Season One (1996)
Profiler introduces us to Dr. Samantha Waters (Ally Walker), a female forensic psychologist with a very powerful and unique gift that allows her to see past the physical evidence and get a glimpse into the mind of the criminal, as well as the victim and visualize the crime in a way not many others can.
Profiler is given a Dolby 2.0 Surround transfer that was quite active and engaging considering its more humble, televised roots.
Profiler was an enjoyable set and while not nearly as entertaining as current shows like CSI, NBC/A&E have given interested parties and fans alike a great way to revisit the first season of the series.

Profiler's ensemble was often surprising, even when the cases they solved (and they always solved them) started to seem routine.
A retired FBI profiler, she's only convinced to come back to work in the series pilot, "Insight," by Bailey's earnest entreaties that she help track down a serial killer in Atlanta.
Bailey knows her past -- that her husband was murdered by a serial killer deemed "Jack of All Trades," a serial killer so devious and heartless that he remains on the loose as the series begins, and spends the first season stalking Sam and her friends.

In NBC's "Profiler," Ally Walker plays a character nearly identical to the hero of Fox's upcoming "Millennium," except that she's female.
A photographer and psychic who lives with a cranky sculptor, she can divine the identity of a murderer by visiting the scene of the crime and then having fl-and-white flashbacks accompanied by loud noises on the soundtrack.
She's in hiding because a certain rude serial killer calling himself the "Jack of All Trades" is lurking around somewhere with a big fat grudge against her.

The series opener, Insight, begins three years after Sam originally left the bureau due to the murder of her husband at the hands of a serial killer who had become known as Jack-of-all-Trades - a reference to the fact that he never killed in the same way twice.
It wasn't until Living TV picked up the show in January 2000 that viewers were finally able to see the conclusion to the season one cliffhanger.

Premiering on September 21, 1996, the series lasted four seasons as part of NBC's Saturday-night "Thrillogy" line-up, attracting a predominantly female audience drawn to its lead character, FBI profiler and single mother Samantha "Sam" Waters, played by Ally Walker.
Profiler borrowed heavily from The Silence of the Lambs and The X-Files while cribbing its title sequence from Seven, but the series established its own dark identity through slick production values and gruesomely plausible plots.
Walker's DVD commentary on the pilot episode repeats the official reason for her departure after two seasons (she'd grown weary of the show's humorless tone), while Davi's is refreshingly frank, citing on-set squabbles and network mismanagement as reasons for first-season hardship.

She has a slight one-up on the serial killers that she and the team she's on, which is led by the semi-no-nonsense Bailey Malone (Davi): she gets psychic flashes regarding the killers and the crime itself.
What really drives her, though, is the fact that a serial killer known as Jack of All Trades killed her husband years before--and the bastard's still at large (and lurking around as a lame kind of throughline for the entire series).
This series is not a bad crime drama--and even though it's not terribly old, it can still feel dated when placed up against the sleek, highly evolved Law and Order machine or this show's stepchild, CSI.
