		Progestins are classified according to their structure (A thing constructed; a complex construction or entity) in C19 and C21 progestagens.
		The C19 ones are derived from testosterone (A potent androgenic hormone produced chiefly by the testes; responsible for the development of male secondary sex characteristics), the C21 ones from progesterone (A steroid hormone (trade name Lipo-Lutin) produced in the ovary; prepares and maintains the uterus for pregnancy).

		Part of the study was intended to examine the health benefits and the risks of hormone replacement therapy, including the risks of breast cancer, heart attacks, strokes, and blood clots.
		In July 2002, one component of the WHI, which studied the use of estrogen and progestin in women who had a uterus, was stopped early because the health risks exceeded the health benefits.
		A second component of the study, which studied estrogen-only therapy in women who no longer have a uterus, was stopped early in March 2004.
