Prograph -- Facts, Info, and Encyclopedia article   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Prograph is a (additional info and facts about visual programming language) visual programming language that uses iconic symbols to represent actions to be taken on data.
A group of Prograph users calling themselves The Open Prograph Initiative has been in existence since the late 1990s; formed initially with the goal of keeping Prograph viable in the face of OS advances by Apple and Microsoft, the group now also seeks to create a new visual programming language to serve as Prograph's successor.
In Prograph a method is represented by a series of icons, each icon containing an instructions (or group of them).

Prograph   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Prograph is a graphical programming language that uses iconic symbols to represent actions to be taken on data.
One of a class of dataflow languages, Prograph was offered commercially for many years on the Apple Macintosh platform.
While in theory Prograph was an interesting attempt to break out of the traditional paradigm of text-processing for program construction, it failed as a practical system due to what amounted to solvable GUI problems.

 Distributed Prograph
Prograph [2] is a visual programming language which uses dataflow as its model; it has an object-oriented class system which provides modularity and code reusability, and the whole is delivered in an integrated environment.
Prograph implements a modified version of dataflow principles in which freedom of side-effects and absence of global variables are no longer guaranteed.
In the current version of Prograph, the operations on the dataflow graph are executed according to a serial schedule of execution; that is, each operation constitutes an atomic unit of execution.

[No title]   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Prograph is a commercial programming language and system, including a compiler, debugger, run-time environment, persistent object store, execution profiler, visual user interface, and extensive library.
Prograph's overreliance on boxes to hide detail, contain control flow and specify execution paths leads to a diagram that is very hard to understand in toto and whose viewable subcomponents are boring and not very helpful.
The interior of every window in Prograph is essentially a DAG (directed acyclic graph); control flows from the top terminals to the bottom, passing through function boxes in between and occasionally splitting and rejoining.

Prograph Primitive   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Readers who don’t use or intend to use Prograph will still be able to adapt the C language binary search for their own purposes.
Prograph employs a use or reference counting mechanism as the basis of its automatic garbage collection.
To properly maintain use counts in a Prograph primitive you need to ask the question, “After the primitive has finished execution, what references to data items will remain?” Categories 3, 4 and 7 are the only ones that can be accessed from inside a primitive.

In addition, Prograph is one of the few object-oriented languages in which there is no SELF construct (or a ‘this’ construct, to use the C++ terminology).
Prograph deals with this issue by enabling the programmer to ‘iconify’ any portion of any piece of code at any time during the development process.
The Prograph application framework is comparable in its breadth and depth to other commercially supported frameworks, but when the power of the Prograph language and the speed of its development environment are taken into account, Prograph CPX stands out as a superb application development tool.

Because Prograph uses data-flow diagrams to describe code (rather than control flow diagrams, as VIP does, for example), execution always begins with the first case of a method and, if necessary, is directed to the next case using control mechanisms to be described later in this article.
Prograph is an object-oriented language, part of which implies that the resolution of which method to call can be deferred until runtime.
Prograph also makes it possible to roll back on the case and method level and you can even roll forwards within a case, within certain limitations.

About a decade ago I used Prograph "Classic" on a Mac IIci along with Think C to write or integrate XPrims (and was disappointed at the data segment limitations---you really wanted to know that, didn't you?).
My main disappointment with Prograph is the lack of an import/export facility for code from/to a text representation, or of any available classes and methods to internally manipulate code.
Unfortunately Prograph code is so "proprietary" that only the Prograph IDE can read it, and the latter dictates only manual work can edit/create code.

I had always been skeptical about Prograph, chiefly because of an obvious drawback of its approach: your program can't be documented in a small space.
The only hitch is that if you want to save a program as stand-alone (instead of running it at low speed inside the Prograph interpreter), you must buy a compiler for a mere $25, which Pictorius calls a shareware fee and has promised to donate to charity.
