In 1874 a concession was granted for a line from the port of Progreso to Merida (222 m.), and in 1878 four concessions were added under which 806 m.

I have set up a meeting with the Port Captain of Progreso for tomorrow morning to show him all of the reasons I believe that the airguns of the Maurice Ewing constitute a legitimate threat to both the ocean life and the families that rely upon fishing along the northern Yucatan coast.
This was the man who decided not to allow Manuel Jimenez, the head of one of the local fishermen´s unions, to take several of us out to go swimming next to the Ewing accompanied by the press.

George first went to Yucatan to observe the departure of trans-Gulf migrants in 1945 and again in 1948, but I was unable to accompany him either time.
Our day to day bird lists at Progreso were not as exciting as those we made at other places we visited on the Peninsula, mainly because at Progreso we were located in the middle of a coconut plantation.
The whole three weeks in Yucatan were delightful even though we got little sleep (never more than three hours in succession for over a week) and despite certain problems that we encountered with regard to finding suitable food and safe drinking water.

We were about to turn back toward SMA from Veracruz dejected but didn’t want to waste the extra week we had set aside for this trip so we followed the coast first south, then east than amazingly north and east again.
We found out that Progreso was THE place to spend summer vacations for the wealthy of Merida and Mexico City before Hurricane Gilbert 13 years before.
Almost anything can be obtained in Progreso itself, but it you want US style shopping, Merida is only 30 miles away with malls, multiplexes, department stores, chain restaurants and everything else that we have run away from but still like to visit on occasion.

 The Tramways of Yucatán - Part 1
Construction began in 1874 on Yucatán's first steam railroad, a 35 km 1435 mm gauge line from Mérida to Progreso [see Yucatán map], but it did not open until 1881.
Another steam line opened east to Izamal in 1884 and the state's second tram system began operation in Progreso in 1893.
