It lies near the northwestern tip of the Yucatán Peninsula, 23 miles (37 km) south of Progreso, its port on the Gulf of Mexico.
The economy of the Yucatán is largely dependent on agriculture and tourism.
Although vessels must anchor offshore, where a breakwater stretches approximately 1 mile (1.5 km) into deeper water, and are not protected from wind, Progreso is the major port on the peninsula, located about 22 miles (35 km) north of Mérida, the state capital.

Progreso is a port city in the state of Yucatán, Mexico, located on the Gulf of Mexico in the north-west of the state at 21.28°N 89.67°W, some 45 minutes north of the state capital of Mérida by highway.

During the military and police operations--which include the burning of houses, tear gas and bazooka attacks, and the use of helicopter gunships to attack civilians--a gun battle allegedly breaks out in the community of Unión Progreso, between security forces and the Zapatista bases of support defending their community.
Following the brutal attack, the military is placed on "maximum alert", and additional troops are brought in from the states of Campeche and Yucatán to reinforce the army presence in the municipalities of Ocosingo and Las Margaritas.

Declarada la independencia de Yucatán y su posterior anexión al resto de la República Mexicana (1821), el pueblo de Chicxulub queda comprendido en el partido de la costa cuya cabecera era Izamal.
Colinda con los siguientes municipios: al norte con Ixil, al sur con Conkal, al este con Ixil y Mococha y al oeste con Progreso.
Desde la segunda mitad del siglo XIX, el pueblo de Chicxulub pasó a la juridiscción del partido de Tixkokob, hasta el año de 1918 en que se erige como cabecera del municipio del mismo nombre.
