The Progressive National Baptist Convention, Inc. was formed at Cincinnati, Ohio in 1961, a division of the older National Baptist Convention, U.S.A., Inc. (NBCUSA).
Headquarters are in Washington, D.C. The PBNC has partnered with the predominantly white American Baptist Churches in the USA since 1970 and is a member of the National Council of Churches and the Baptist World Alliance.
Venchael Booth, pastor of Zion Baptist in Cincinnati, was the unheralded founder of the movement.

 Progressive National Baptist Convention : Black History Daily
Progressive National Baptist Convention also called NATIONAL BAPTIST CONVENTION, U.S.A., INC., the larger of two associations of black Baptist churches that formed as a result of a schism in 1915 in the National Baptist Convention.
Eventually these congregations joined in various national organizations, and the merger of the Foreign Mission Baptist Convention (1880), the American National Baptist Convention (1886), and the Baptist National Educational Convention (1893) in Atlanta, Ga., in 1895 produced the National Baptist Convention.
The National Baptist Convention had its origins in the period after the American Civil War, when many independent black Baptist congregations were established.

January 24, 2005, NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Progressive National Baptist Convention, Inc. (PNBC); National Baptist Convention USA, Inc. (NBCUSA); The National Baptist Convention of America, Inc. (NBCA), and National Missionary Baptist Convention of America, Inc. (NMBCA) are gathering in Nashville Jan. 24-28 to work on a myriad of issues relevant to the African American community.
A year ago, the present presidents of the four African American Baptist Conventions, Dr. Major L. Jemison, President of PNBC; Dr. William J. Shaw, President of NBCUSA; Dr. Stephen J. Thurston, President of NBCA; and Dr. Melvin V. Wade, President of NMBCA, met to organize this historic meeting of African American Baptists.
The meeting's theme is "Building Better Bridges for Ministry." The four African American Baptist Conventions are coming together to celebrate, worship, and work to set an agenda for African American Baptists.
