Proinsias De Rossa (born Francis Ross on 15 May 1940, in Dublin) is an Irish Labour Party politician and former leader of the Workers Party and subsequently of Democratic Left.
De Rossa himself was elected to the European Parliament for the Dublin constituency, where he topped the poll and almost succeeded in replacing Fine Gael as the capital's second-largest party.
De Rossa was a member of the European convention which produced the July 2003 draft European constitution.

Proinsias De Rossa (born 15 May, 1940) was involved in Sinn Féin at an early age and was interned in the Curragh from 1956 to 1959.
In the election of 1989 the party increased its Dáil representation from 4 to 7 seats, and De Rossa won a seat in the European Parliament for the constituency of Dublin which he held until 1992.
De Rossa became Minister for Social Welfare, with Pat Rabbitte as a "Super Junior Minister", a non-voting member of the cabinet.

There was some discussion of my previous post on Proinsias De Rossa’s vote, making him the only Irish MEP to vote in favour of the Data Retention Directive passed in December of last year.
Proinsias De Rossa supported the compromise agreed between the EP and the Council at the December EP Plenary Session which included important amendments of the Commission’s September 2005 proposal (see Socialist Group statement below) negotiated chiefly but not exclusively by the Socialist Group.
Proinsias De Rossa particularly welcomed the fact that the compromise measure is to be assessed three years after it comes into effect, with the full involvement of the European Parliament.

Dublin Labour MEP Proinsias De Rossa has just been told that the European Commission is "disappointed" that the Irish Government still hasn't provided the information requested last October about the impact of the M50 road project on the Carrickmines site and that it is now considering the possibilities open to it under EU law.
Arising from a complaint on the issue submitted last Autumn by Mr De Rossa, the Commission in October asked the Government to verify that it had fully complied with the EU legislation when examining the impact of the M50 motorway project on the Carrickmines site.
As a good Stalinist De Rossa want the Euro bureaucracy to solve a problem, which if Ireland were a democracy would be solved locally by the people.

It was a clever piece of public relations for the Labour Party leader Ruairi Quinn and Democratic Left leader Proinsias de Rossa to announce their discussion about the future of their parties in the wake of the Good Friday referendum result.
De Rossa only scraped home for the fourth seat in his Dublin North-West constituency last year and is set for defeat when it becomes a three-seater.
De Rossa's influence contributed to the lack of drive in the Rainbow government with regard to the peace process.

The bill was for work the party was asked to do for the former Democratic Left leader, Proinsias de Rossa, in connection with his libel action against Independent Newspapers.
In 1997, Mr de Rossa was awarded £300,000 damages and costs by the High Court after a jury found he had been libelled by journalist Eamon Dunphy in the Sunday Independent five years earlier.
Accordingly the Workers Party had an obligation to assist in the de Rossa litigation for the benefit of the membership and their supporters.

In June of 1989, Proinsias was elected to the European Parliament for the Dublin constituency.
Proinsias served as Minister for Social Welfare in the 'Rainbow' Government (Fine Gael/ Labour/Democratic Left) from 1994 to 1997, initiating a wide range of reforms, including the introduction of the country's first National Anti-Poverty Strategy.

MISSED opportunities and mismanagement of the country will be the legacy of the Government, Labour Party president Proinsias de Rossa said last night.

I haven’t seen this anywhere else and a number of the comments in the earlier post voiced a specific disappointment with Proinsias De Rossa’s decision, alone amongst Irish MEPs, to vote in favour of the Data Retention Directive.
Speaking in Strasbourg as the European Parliament adopted proposals on Data Retention Proinsias De Rossa, Labour MEP for Dublin, said: “I welcome the European Parliament decision today to approve a proposal for a directive on data retention, heavily amended in the interests of citizens’ security and their rights to privacy.
Mr De Rossa followed the Socialist Party line on this issue, and says that the party was advised by Martine Roure MEP from the French Socialist Party.

Labour MEP Proinsias De Rossa told Members of the European Parliament this evening that as many as one in seven Dubliners may show signs of lung damage caused by asbestos poisoning.
Mr De Rossa was speaking in the EP debate on European asbestos legislation in which he called for a major overhaul of existing directives and in which he also condemned the Government's failure to implement these laws in full.
Mr De Rossa said the European Union must now carry out a major overhaul of its anti-asbestos legislation, some of which hasn't been revised for almost twenty years.
