Layne Christensen Company - Directional Drilling Services
The purpose of this project was to drill a shaft, starting on shore, toward the ocean passing beneath the shoreline and then curving upward to penetrate the seafloor at an offshore depth where the cables would be free from the destruction of storm-driven waves and currents.
Because this project was impacting Class AA offshore waters, conventional drilling fluids or seaward discharge of cuttings were not allowed.
Directional drilling with the Accu-Dril® Motor greatly reduced the impact to the sensitive coral reef as opposed to conventional blasting and trenching techniques which are devastating to the pristine marine environment.

The exact time delay is unknown, but for a Type II supernova, astronomers expect the neutrino flood to be released seconds after the stellar core collapse, while the first electromagnetic signal may be hours or days later.
The SNEWS project uses a network of neutrino detectors to monitor the sky for candidate supernova events; it is hoped that the neutrino signal will provide a useful advance warning of an exploding star.

 physics - Project DUMAND
Project DUMAND (Deep Underwater Muon And Neutrino Detector) was a proposed underwater neutrino telescope to be built in the Pacific Ocean, off the shore of Hawaii, a kilometer beneath the surface.
Because of the nature of the interaction between the neutrino and the proton, Project DUMAND would have been most sensitive to ultra-high energy neutrinos, and completely insensitive to solar neutrinos.
Although it was never completed, Project Dumand was in a sense a precursor of Antarctic Muon And Neutrino Detector Array, or AMANDA.

 Cable Experience
This is an ambitious R&D project which addresses the loop formation problem in its entirety from the cable manufacture to placement of the cable on the seabed, and attempts to develop a practical methodology by which loops can be avoided.
This project demonstrated that the use of the ICS to control the cable bottom tension and cable shape during cable retrieval operations could minimize (by a factor of 4 to 5) the length of cable that would be dragged on the ocean bottom.
For this project, Makai made several modifications to the original Integrated Control System (ICS) to lay cables with zero bottom tension, with bodies (repeaters, transponders, hydrophones, etc.) attached to the cable, and a high degree of control on the cable slack at the touchdown point.
