A slogan of the project is "break down the bars of ignorance and illiteracy", because its volunteers aim to continue spreading public literacy and appreciation for the literary heritage just as public libraries began to do in the early 20th century.
Project Gutenberg has been criticized for lack of scholarly rigor in its etexts: for example, in inadequate detailing of editions used and in the omission of original published prefaces and critical apparatus.
Project Gutenberg Australia hosts many texts which are public domain according to Australian copyright law, but still under copyright (or of uncertain status) in the United States, with a focus on Australian writers and books about Australia.

Project Gutenberg began in 1971, in the early and nebulous days of the Internet, when navigation and information retrieval was esoteric at best.
The project's director, Michael Hart, has a long history of funding the project from his own pocket, and now, because of the trend of funds being sent to more technologically flashy projects, it appears as though he will have to continue to do so, or shut the project down.
Those interested in helping Hart to keep Project Gutenberg going should contact him by e-mail, or subscribe to his volunteer listserv, which can be found on the Project Gutenberg website.

Michael Hart, the besieged founder of Project Gutenberg, took time off from his Hawaiian vacation to challenge the recommendation that PG have a strong, truly independent board to avoid future debacles like PG 2, aka Kentucky Fried Gutenberg.
For months Project Gutenberg volunteers have been polishing their main site, which today is at Gutenberg.net rather than the venerable Promo.net address.
Please also note that Gutenberg 2 says it is "is not affiliated with the Project Gutenberg Literary Archive Foundation and has received no funding, materials, or any other support from the Foundation." I'd also be interested, however, in knowing about possible money flows in the other direction--to the original PG or its people.
