		Project Nike was a US Army project, proposed in May 1945 by Bell Labs, to develop a line-of-sight anti-aircraft missile system.
		Project Nike began in 1944 when the US military demanded a new defense system to combat the potential new jet aircraft.
		Nike Hercules was included in SALT I discussions as a ABM and following the treaty signed in 1972 and further budget cuts almost all Nike sites were deactivated by February 4, 1974.

		Ed Thelen's Nike Hercules site has some info and another photo of an unsupported Nike Zeus in the history section (the photo appears to be a reverse angle of the photo at the US Nuclear Weapons Cost Study Project).

		In mid September 2003, 0100101110101101.ORG started a surreal art project called Nike Ground (http://www.nikeground.com), a "hyper-real theatrical performance" built around a fake guerrilla marketing campaign: Nike was supposedly buying streets and squares in major world capitals, in order to rename them and insert giant monuments of their famous logo.
