  Pigeon Facts
Pigeons range throughout all of the United States and most of Canada and are found in almost all metropolitan areas.
The common pigeon was imported by early settlers as food animals and to serve as carriers of messages.
Pigeons are gregarious and tend to be found in small flocks of around twenty to thirty birds.

 Project Wildlife: Living with Pigeon
Another indigenous species, the passenger pigeon, was the most numerous bird (estimated at 3 to 5 billion) in North America in the 1600s but became extinct in the late 1800s due to hunting and deforestation for agriculture.
Pigeons are larger than doves and tend to have square or rounded tails.
Members of the pigeon family share an unusual characteristic: They submerge their beaks in water to drink (much like a horse), while most birds take a small amount of water in their beaks and tilt their heads back to swallow.

The pink pigeon, the largest of all the pigeons and doves found on Mauritius is another highly endangered species.
The success to date of the recovery project for the Mauritius pink pigeon is a good example of how intensive management techniques can bring a species back from the brink of extinction.

Design is in progress for the first project, Main Street Marketplace, an entertainment, retail and dining district with 180,000 square feet of retail space and 50,000 square feet of restaurants, plus a 12-screen cinema with 2,220 seats.
The plan for Pigeon Falls Village cites 320,000 square feet of specialty retail space, 80,000 square feet of destination restaurants, $100 million worth of family entertainment attractions that include an indoor/outdoor water park and 2,000 units of condo-resort accommodations that will be sold and then rented like hotel rooms.
“Pigeon Falls Village will combine the immersive, escapist environment of a theme park with the everyday freedom to come and go as you please because there will be no gate fee.” The developers estimate Main Street Marketplace will produce between 700 and 900 jobs and $10 million in sales taxes annually.

In simulated rocket tests, the pigeons produced "surprisingly good results." The researchers were convinced that a pigeon could successfully guide a speeding missile under optimum conditions, compensating for his own and the missile's errors.
But after three years of equipment development and testing, the project was abandoned because the range of the Orcon system could be no greater than the range of any optical system and the system could be used only in the daytime.
It turned out that 55.3 per cent of the runs made were successful--that is, the pigeons were able to keep the target image on their screens for the duration of more than half their flights.

Unique among birds, pigeons feed their young with “crop milk” which both the male and female can produce (flamingos and penguins may have similar “milks,” but they are not produced in the crop).
Pigeons care for their young by providing food and shelter, and may mate for life.
Pigeon keeping is an international hobby, as young readers will see in Only a Pigeon, the story of an Ethiopian pigeon fancier, or in Angelo, David Macauley’s story of an Italian craftsman with a soft heart.

Racing Home...The Gallatin County 4-H Homing Pigeon Project
Goals for the project include learning about the history and origin of the domestic pigeon, learning how to care for and keep records on pigeons, and learning to show and race pigeons.
Homing pigeons are typically trained as soon as they leave the nest (around 30 days old) and gradually work their way up to longer and longer flights home.
Since pigeons in a race each fly to their respective home lofts, the winners are judged by their "yards-per-minute" speed.

Project Pigeon - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
During World War II, Project Pigeon (or Project Orcon, for "organic control") was American behaviorist B.
The control system involved a lens at the front of the missile projecting an image of the target to a screen inside, while a pigeon trained (by operant conditioning) to recognize the target pecked at it.
However, Skinner's plans to use pigeons in Pelican missiles was apparently too radical for the military establishment; although he had some success with the training, he could not get his idea taken seriously.

The investigation was codenamed PROJECT PIGEON, and Skinner hoped to be able to use pigeons to guide a weapon to within 6 meters (20 feet) of a target.
Each pigeon was supposed to peck at its screen, which was wired to provide feedback to the missile's flight controls, to keep the crosshairs on target.
The pigeons were trained with slides of aerial photographs of the target, and if they kept the crosshairs on the target, they were rewarded by a grain deposited in a tray in front of them.

I'd suggest that it was the confluence of the demonstration of the power of mutual reinforcement systems and the earlier observation of his daughters' acquisition of verbal behavior that led to his future emphasis on the applications of behaviorism to complex (and verbal) human behavior in real world situations.
