Expert Project Management - An Improved Project Lifecycle Model - Edmund Fish
The use of the word lifecycle is probably a throwback to biology where a lifecycle refers to the birth-reproduction-death cycle of species.
The project lifecycle is a pivotal concept in the understanding of projects, mapping out the progress of the project from birth to death.
However, there seems to be an almost endless confusion over what the project lifecycle is. It is important to understand the project lifecycle, because it is one of the three fundamental dimensions of project concepts; the others being the project processes and the project topics, or knowledge areas.

Plan the Project (University of Washington)- Set the foundation for the project work by defining the tasks to be accomplished, and the timeframe, resources, staffing, communication, and costs involved in completing these tasks.
Project Planning Under the Threat of a Disruptive Event (University of Washington)- In this paper, the authors consider a project planning problem when there is a possibility of a disruptive event (e.g., strike) occurring sometime during the project.
Project mangers will address these elements at different levels of detail depending on the size and type of the project, but all elements should receive some consideration during the planning process.

Expert Project Management - An Improved Project Lifecycle Model - Edmund Fish
By taking the third level generic project lifecycle proposed here and examining it using the five processes set out by the Project management Institute's guide to the Body of Knowledge, each half of the project lifecycle can be seen to be a project in its own right.
This attempt to straightjacket and confuse the project lifecycle with the project processes is only indicative and ignores the micro-planning and interactions that occur between the process phases.
On larger projects, a more common approach is to appoint a "construction manager" since the increase in information and decisions to be handled can no longer be handled by a single person.

Expert Project Management - An Improved Project Lifecycle Model - Edmund Fish
In searching for a more detailed generic project lifecycle one important fact must be borne in mind – that the model should be simple and generic.
The generic model is inclusive of all projects, with the exception of the most basic, irrespective of their industry sector.
It is the division of the project into these work packages that has the potential to add more phases to a particular project's lifecycle.

 Project Lifecycle
The phases of a project life cycle are not the same as the Project Management Process Groups described in detail in Chapter 3.
A project phase is generally concluded with a review of the work accomplished and the deliverables to determine acceptance, whether extra work is still required, or whether the phase should be considered closed.
The project life cycle definition will also identify which transitional actions at the end of the project are included or not included, in order to link the project to the ongoing operations of the performing organization.

In contrast, the Large Standard lifecycle's design phase has many of the more generic activities, such as requirements allocation, that are a familiar part of the ECS design.
It is interesting that the most important differences between these two lifecycles lie in the fraction of the total effort devoted to 'Integration and Testing' and to the 'Project Office'.
If ECS were being developed with a large client-server lifecycle, we would expect nearly half of its effort to be devoted to 'IandT', with a relatively small role for the 'Project Office'.

Project Lifecycle Models: How the differ and when to use them
For projects with risky elements, it's beneficial to run a series of risk-reduction iterations which can be followed by a waterfall or other non-risk-based lifecycle.
