Peace - Biocrawler   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
Peace undoubtedly carries a positive connotation; almost nobody admits to opposing peace; world peace is widely seen as one of the most noble goals of humanity.
In certain contexts, peace may refer specifically to an agreement concluded to end a war, to a lack of external warfare or a period when a country's armies are not fighting enemies, or to the quietude common at night or in remote areas that allows for sleep or meditation.
Peace, then, is not merely the absence of war; it requires the absence of evil.

peace - Article and Reference from OnPedia.com
Peace is generally defined as a state of quiet or tranquillity, as an absence of disturbance or agitation (Latin derivation Pax = Absentia Belli).
Peace can be voluntary, where potential agitators choose to abstain from disturbance, or it can be enforced, by suppressing those who might otherwise cause such disturbance.
Proponents of the concept of positive peace argue that in a society where there is the structual and cultural oppression of one group by another, though there may be no violence, such a situation cannot be considered peace.

In particular, Arabs are deindividualized and are often portrayed as intolerant or backward, while positive aspects of Arab culture are seldom given attention.
As in the case of Anti-Semitism, prejudice against Arabs should be distinguished from opposition to the policies of Arab states or of certain Arab populations (specifically the Palestinian).
Peace, of course, doesn't merely mean the signing of peace treaties, as much as we have longed for that, but for the establishment of political, economic and cultural relations with Israel's neighbors which can create a peace which will enhance the lives of all the citizens of the region."

Loosely structured, with some elements working clandestinely and others working openly through mosques and social service institutions to recruit members, raise money, organize activities, and distribute propaganda, Hamas's strength is concentrated in the Gaza Strip and a few areas of the West Bank.

As its methods have changed over the last thirty years, so has its rhetoric, now effectively claiming that Israeli civilians are "military targets" by virtue of living in a highly militarized state with conscription.

The religion of Islam brought by Muhammad began in the Hejaz region of present-day Saudi Arabia in about 610 CE, and according to adherents.com (http://www.adherents.com) it now comprises 1.3 billion believers, 23% of the world's population.
If the current growth rate of 1.76% per year (as of 2004) is simply extrapolated, Islam may reach 2 billion adherents shortly before 2030; it will not overtake Christianity before the 2070s, however, but since world population is projected to curb before that time, this estimate is unreliable.
