The Sardinian Pika (Prolagus sardus) was a pika native to the Mediterranean island of Sardinia until its extinction in the late 1700s or early 1800s.
It was described by early Sardinian authors as "a giant rabbit with no tail", and it is believed that the Nuragici, the ancient peoples of Sardinia, viewed them as a delicacy.
It and the Corsican Pika are the only two animals belonging to the genus Prolagus.

Titanomys is the earliest form, from the Middle Miocene, succeeded by Lagopsis, and then by the modern Ochotona.
In this line there is a tendency to lose the last upper molar, but in Prolagus, which ranges in the Pliocene from Sardinia and Corsica to Spain, and forms a side-branch, the corresponding lower toothhas likewise disappeared.
In general dental characters, especially the retention of three pairs of molars, this genus approximates to the Leporidae, although in the absence of post-orbital processes and the pattern of the molars it departs less widely from the modern Ochotonidae than does Prolagus.

1987 noted that Prolagus oeningensis is not recorded later than the Vallesian, which is quite different from suggesting an Early Miocene migration.
Not only do Prolagus and Myomimus occur in El Arquillo and Maramena, but these localities have also yielded material of species related to the other micromammals of Gargano that were supposed to represent the second migration wave.
Thus, potential ancestors of all the micromammals of Gargano belong to the normal Messinian mainland fauna, and may have reached Gargano simultaneously, during the Messinian sea-level lowstand.
