Promiscuity - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The term is most commonly applied to sexual behavior, where it refers to a person who does not limit their sex life to the cultural norm, typically one partner, or to the framework of a long term monogamous sexual relationship.
It is worth noting that people who are called "promiscuous" under this usage, may in fact be quite selective in their choice of sexual partners.
It has been shown that, in some cases, excessively promiscuous behavior is caused by sexual addiction or alcoholism and substance abuse.

Promiscuity is perhaps misleading as a title, as it suggests that females are being less choosy in mating with multiple males, when it is often precisely the opposite.
Contrary to beliefs, females are remarkably promiscuous and have evolved an array of tricks to determine who exactly will be the father of their offspring.
If you thought love and sex were complicated then 'Promiscuity' will show you how true this is across all animals, but it will also reveal that there are very logical reasons for it.

Cultural practices contributing to the transmission of HIV in Africa
Factors thought to influence this sexual transmission include (1) promiscuity, with a high prevalence of sexually transmitted disease; (2) sexual practices that have been associated with increased risk of transmission of AIDS virus (homosexuality and anal intercourse); and (3) cultural practices that are possibly connected with increased virus transmission (female "circumcision" and infibulation).
Promiscuity, especially the total number of sexual partners, is correlated with AIDS in both the United States and Africa [34,35].
Prostitutes are important in the transmission of STDs in Africa [40] and may be important in the transmission of AIDS both in the West and in Africa [41].

In species where the females were most promiscuous, the males had developed several strategies to ensure they would be the male most likely to father any offspring and pass on their genes.
Chimpanzees, for example, which are a promiscuous species, had more advanced evolution of a gene controlling the stickiness of semen than gorillas, which tend to be monogamous and stay faithful to their partner for life.
Humans were midway between, suggesting that while women are nothing like as promiscuous as chimps, neither are they as faithful as gorillas....

Promiscuity (Tim Birkhead) - book review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Promiscuity is a tour of animal sexuality, exploring the effects of sperm competition and sex-based selective pressures on reproductive biology and behaviour.
Promiscuity can have obvious direct benefits — a sufficient supply of sperm, "gifts" of various kinds that can accompany insemination, avoidance of rejection costs, and paternal care — and there are also possible indirect genetic benefits (though testing for these is difficult).
He even begins Promiscuity with a story about Italian men in the United States returning home to Italy to shoot a honey buzzard (a ritual supposed to ensure their wives will be faithful) — while leaving their wives behind, unattended.

At the other end of the spectrum from virginity, women who choose more than one partner have often been referred to as "the whore." In our treatment, "whore" is an archetype, meaning a woman who is not a virgin, whether she's had one lover or one hundred.
The line between multiple lovers and harmful promiscuity is one we each have to draw for ourselves.
Her frank attitude toward sex is a marked contrast to the timid "purity" women were expected to have since the Victorian era.

Medical experts have debunked the myth that promiscuity is the primary cause of HIV transmission.(2) What the ideologues at USAID deny is medical transmission is a leading cause of HIV, often in the form of injectable contraception.
They also deny that USAID flagrantly promotes promiscuity with its family planning policy, while claiming to be against it in its HIV policy.
For the population controllers at USAID, the myth that Africans are promiscuous unto death dovetails nicely with efforts to lower the fertility of African women, since USAID's AIDS relief programs have been merged into population control programs.

Promiscuity Among Male Gays   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
The urge for indulging in promiscuous behavior may be higher among heterosexual men than is manifested in any society, because the taboo of promiscuity limits the available opportunities.
When gays act upon their promiscuous urges (partly because they have the freedom to do so), the pool of available promiscuous gays also increases, thereby increasing the opportunity and providing an easy incentive to other gays with similar urges.
Even if the assumption that most promiscuous gays are liberals and most monogamous ones are conservative does not hold, the only assumption that needs to be true is that the more visible gays are also the more promiscuous.

The Panda's Thumb: Promiscuity in Evolution
This is crucial because they found that in some cases, activity had substantially improved for other promiscuous activities (indicating plasticity), but had not decreased by a large amount for the native activity (indicating robustness).
Promiscuous activities, however, have not been selected for, so they tend to be more plastic.
While plenty of previous studies have demonstrated the prevalence of promiscuity among various enzymes, it is not well established that the native function can remain undisturbed while the promiscuous functions are greatly improved.

We are exploring the abundance of promiscuous activities, their mechanism, magnitude and possible relevance as evolutionary starting points (James, et.al.
Current research is aimed at establishing that conformational diversity and functional promiscuity increase the effective size of protein repertoires and provides ample starting points for the evolution of new functions and folds (Gould SM, Tawfik DS (2005)).
Indeed, the analysis of several members of the same enzyme superfamily revealed shared promiscuous activities and evolutionary features that support the hypothesis that some of these members diverged from a similar, or perhaps the same, ancestor (Roodveldt, 2005 Biochemistry).

And it should be easy for nature to introduce promiscuous activity, according to recent work by a team led by biochemistry professor John A. Gerlt of the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, and Jeremy Minshull, formerly of Redwood City, Calif.-based Maxygen.
Herschlag suggests that the potential for promiscuity in enzyme active sites may be the key to the evolution of new enzymes, giving nature a head start toward evolving an enzyme that's perfectly suited to catalyzing the promiscuous reaction.

Meaningless sex? Male mounting reduces sexual promiscuity of females
However, previous studies have not fully considered the possibility that female promiscuity may be inhibited by stimuli generated by the simple act of male mounting.
By using a novel but technologically simple technique--fitting some hens with a light plastic harness covering their cloaca and thus preventing insemination--the researchers were able to separate the effect of insemination products from that of mounting alone and to detect the behavioral response of hens.
The researchers therefore showed that roosters can defend their paternity by reducing the promiscuity of the hens that they have inseminated; they do so by exploiting in these hens the response to the simple stimulus of mounting.

 THE MAN2MAN ALLIANCE Definitions Promiscuity
Multipartnering is also employed by apologists for the "sexual revolution," who object to the term "sexual promiscuity" because they believe it implies a negative, usually faith-based, moral judgement of sexual behavior.
Among gay men in particular, there are several well-established forms of promiscuity, including group sex, open relationships (in which couples say they're "committed, but play" either together or separately), and "friends with benefits," men with whom men get together regularly for casual sex without an emotional committment.
This scenario is not far-fetched (see, for example, the discussion of barebacking in Multipartnered Pansexualism or Heroic Love), and is what is responsible for the very high prevalence of HIV and other anally-vectored diseases among gay men.

If that's not promiscuity, what is? Yet none of them would have even the smallest chance of being infected.
Now why should the link between promiscuity and sexual infections be made by so many educators, health workers, government agencies, family planning campaigners, doctors, preachers of all kinds, the media and by most people in general?
This is why the best kind of information and education about sexual infections stresses the use of condoms and other rational behaviour, teaches the skills that are required to enjoy sexual lovemaking, and promote sexual pleasure, equality and freedom.

CONCERNS about rises in promiscuity and premarital sex in modern society are unfounded, with monogamy still the dominant pattern of behaviour.
The first global survey of sexual behaviour, published in British medical journal The Lancet yesterday, shows there is no universal trend towards having sex at an earlier age, despite reported increases in under-age sex and teenage pregnancy.
I guess it's not too surprising, better developed countries are going to not only have more socialization opportunities for the younger crowd (clubs, bars, college, etc), but also better medicine, birth control, etc, so they're bound to feel safer being a bit on the promiscuous side.

Certainly promiscuity can be involved in sex addiction, as a means of fulfilling the need for sex, but the two terms are not the same thing.
