Our approximate route on the off-highway portion of the trip is shown in blue in the NW corner of the Utah map at right.
The railroad grade began at Lucin, Utah not far from the Nevada border, and we drove it east to Promontory Summit and the Golden Spike National Historic Site.

 Rocky Mountains Vacation
The next morning drove over to Promontory Summit, UT - the Golden Spike National Historic Site, the site of the first world's transcontinental railroad.
Here on May 10, 1869, two locomotives, Central Pacific (from the west) and Union Pacific (from the east), pulled up to the one-rail gap left in the track where a golden spike was symbolically tapped and a final iron spike driven connecting the railroads and connecting our country.
We drove north out of UT to I-84 in Idaho driving west with stops in Twin Falls and Boise.

No, it was actually Promontory Point, Utah, where the Central Pacific and Union Pacific Railroads met on May 10, 1869, an event now commemorated at the Golden Spike National Historical Site.
It was fun to see the re-enactment and read about the history; all in all, definitely worth the trip, especially with a Golden Eagle Pass to defray the $7.00 admission fee.
Leaving Promontory, we drove around the scarily technological installation of Thiokol, an aerospace giant with massive government contracts to build rockets for research and defense.
