The Point is a familiar feature to any Hyde Parker who's ever walked through the 55th Street pedestrian underpass and emerged on the other side to find a Prairie School-style field house resting on a meadow of lush green grass.
Part of Daniel Burnham's 1909 plan of Chicago, the Point was developed in the 1920s and landscaped in 1937 by Alfred Caldwell, a noted architect and professor at the Illinois Institute of Technology.
The Point's revetment will now be rebuilt in two phases: the north half will be closed for construction starting this fall through 2002 and then reopened when the south half undergoes construction in 2003.

On the west the ascent could be made in 16 relatively easy miles; but on the east, where the slope was more abrupt, the ascent required, for an airline distance of 5 miles from Blue Creek to the summit, 10 tortuous miles of grade with a climb of 80 feet to the mile.
Built in the valley near where the lines commence the ascent of the Promontory, it is nearly surrounded by grading camps, Benson, Farr and West's headquarters a mile or two south west.
The proximity of the earth-work and blasting to each other, at these and other points along the Promontory line, requires the utmost care and vigilance on the part of all concerned, else serious if not fatal, consequences would be of frequent occurrence.

The one at Promontory Point requires a hike of about a mile in light forest while the one at Myrtle Point is a short walk from a side road and very easy to reach.
One point is on Promontory Butte near the "Promontory" benchmark at 7,914 feet, while another on Myrtle Point does not have a listed elevation but does include a 7,920 foot contour.
Benchmark "Promontory" is located on the tip of a finger of land about 300 yards south of the highpoint, but we did not bother to visit it.

There is supposedly a boat launch ramp on the Western side of Promontory Point, but it's on private property and the road to it is well gated, fenced, and locked.
There is no public access to the point of Promontory, but there is a paved (and private, or so the signs said) road down the East side of the peninsula.
