Proof Gwyneth Paltrow received warm praise as Catherine during the London run of David Auden's play (on which the film is based), and will doubtless received further accolades for her on-screen rendition.
The film does not unwind chronologically - told from Catherine's perspective, the narrative follows her thoughts and responses to Claire and Hal, allowing the audience to gradually understand Catherine's grief and intellectual capabilities as her rationality and abilities are challenged.
The film uses this perspective to explore the internal workings of fear and sadness, resentment and responsibility, and the small moves made towards happiness and reconciliation.

 Mark Bernstein: Proof
Roger Ebert is right when we reports that the atmosphere and language of David Auburn's Proof is exactly right, that when a professor delivers a eulogy he speaks precisely as professors on such occasions do, and that when a theoretical physicist flirts at a mathematician's wake, he speaks and drinks the way theoretical physicists do.
The proof is obviously a stand-in for a play, or perhaps a novel: we're not talking about mathematicians here, but writers.
We also have a worrisome and false note when Catherine, who claims to have written the proof and might not be deluded, expects her new lover to accept her authorship because she asserts it -- to believe her, to have faith.

Proof (2005) + An Unfinished Life
Proof, based on the acclaimed (and thin) Pulitzer Prize-winning David Auburn play, carefully positions Catherine (Paltrow) as the most delicate figurine in the picture's glass menagerie, a twenty-seven-year-old woman mourning the death of her once-brilliant/now-bonkers mathematician father Robert (Anthony Hopkins) whilst rattling around in a giant house on the University of Chicago's campus.
I'm sure that there's a power to it in the claustrophobic confines of a small West End theatre--and I'm sure that the originator of the Catherine role, Mary Louise-Parker, was fantastic in it, generating as she's capable of generating a formidable draught of sympathy and intrigue.
A film that doesn't suffer from formula as much as it languishes in good company with it, An Unfinished Life pins the formerly vibrant Hallstrom to the same Miramax corkboard as John Madden (and as Kevin Smith).

The film defines a “proof” as a confirmation of some great mathematical breakthrough.
I wanted to be educated a little more by the film about the significance of the word and its usage in the area of mathematics, but the story is way too traditional to go that far.
