Lindemann–Weierstrass theorem - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A slight variant on the same proof will show that if α is a nonzero algebraic number sinα, cosα, tanα and their hyperbolic counterparts are also transcendental.
The theorem is named for Ferdinand von Lindemann, who proved the particular result that π is transcendental, and Karl Weierstrass.
The transcendence of e and π are direct corollaries of this theorem.

The following is a well known proof, due to Joseph Fourier, that e is irrational.
For, if we define an irrational number as a number that cannot be represented in the form p/q, where p and q are relatively prime integers, we can prove fairly easily that e is irrational.
In the proof below, we use the fact that e is the sum of the series of inverted factorials.

Math Forum: A Proof of the Pythagorean Theorem
Nonetheless, a rigorous, general proof of the theorem requires the development of deductive geometry, and thus it is thought that Pythagoras probably supplied the first proof.
There are many different proofs of the theorem (even one supplied by President Garfield in 1876!), and we know that the Babylonians knew about the Pythagorean theorem about 1000 years before the time of Pythagoras (born in 572 B.C.).
Most math historians credit him with a proof by dissection, which relies on the use of two squares, one inscribed inside the other.

It is not the proofs that are found to be fallacious but the criticism which rejects them.
It is true of course -- and no Theist denies it -- that for the proper intellectual appreciation of theistic proofs moral dispositions are required, and that moral consciousness, the aesthetic faculty, and whatever other powers or capacities belong to man's spiritual nature, constitute or supply so many data on which to base inferential proofs.

An irrational number is one that cannot be expressed as the ratio of two -integers-.
E^x (e to the x) is a way of determining the "effective" interest rate that applies when the principal is continuously compounded.
However, 'e' also happens to be "transcendental," another fancy property of a number that means it can't be expressed by a finite number of algebraic operations.
