Mortimer Adler is dead   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
I was particularly enthralled with the Propaedia, a single volume "outline of human knowledge" that was the organizing principle (in many ways) for the entire encyclopaedia.
Mortimer Adler was the mastermind behind the Propaedia (and indeed much of the 15th edition of the Britannica).
I loved the audacity of the Propaedia, an attempt to systematize knowledge in a highly pluralistic era in which there is no clear consensus about what is important and what is even known or understood, let alone how everything relates to one another.

As part of his study of the Propaedia, Clarke got in touch directly with the Editorial group in Chicago, from whom he learned that each of the 64,000-odd articles in the Micropaedia portion of the encyclopedia had been classified against the Propaedia outline.
The first test of the software's efficacy as a classifier was then to submit articles from the remaining 30%, without their Propaedia tags, and compare the software's suggested classification with the editors'.
Accuracy at the top level of classification - the ten principal parts of the Propaedia - was about 96%; it decayed progressively at successively deeper layers, falling to about 75% at the fourth level.

The remaining 983 nodes form a hierarchical topical tree, called Propaedia.
Propaedia and Index pages are included in the search set to ensure a connected graph and to be faithful to the EB information architecture --- an actual subset of the Web.
Now consider two agents, A and B, born at the same time and attempting to satisfy the same query, but in different places within this hypergraph of EB document pages.

This aggregation approach is complemented by a flexible segregation approach that goes beyond the separation of the printed volumes in many regards (Figure 4).
The Propaedia (as Spectrum), the Macropaedia (as Knowledge in Depth), the Micropaedia and Yearbooks (under Article) are also available for alphabetical browsing as separate units along with many subsets of the encyclopedia.
Browsing is appropriate for scanning the titles and section titles of possibly relevant articles, or to zero in on a topic from within the broader context.

One of the set's obvious inadequacies is that it doesn't include Eastern thought and culture, the more inclusive and complete the over-all pattern of order, the more it facilitates the development of wisdom.
The Propaedia was designed by EB to assist all people in independent study by organizing all knowledge in a logical and comprehensive system, that's far better than the simple piece- meal alphabetical systems elsewhere.
Your study of philosophy should be comprehensive; for example, as it's offered in EB in both the Propaedia, and the main body of the set.

To achieve these ends, a controlled vocabulary of metadata terms was drawn up that attempted to designate every important aspect of natural, social and personal life appearing in the documents.
It was drafted after reviewing the history of library subject classification, the index terms in standard collections of American historical documents (such as Reuben Gold Thwaites' editions of the Jesuit Relations and Allied Documents and the journals of Lewis and Clark), and the topical divisions of the Encyclopedia Britannica's Propaedia.
Particular effort was given to making it broad enough to encompass the spectrum of human experience, yet short enough to work efficiently in drop-down menus.

A search of "Jean Cocteau," to my surprise, brought up more than 10 related articles.
The other ways to search are to hit either "Nations of the World," "Random Article," "Propaedia," or "Picture Tour." I especially liked Propaedia--it gives you 10 general subjects to choose from, such as "The Earth" or "Art," and then you can go into a subject and narrow it down until you find what you're after.
Another feature: If you run into an unfamiliar word, you can select the Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary from the database listing, type the word you want to look up in the query box, or cut and paste it, activate a search, and get a definition.
