Encyclopedia: Propagandist   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
The propagandist seeks to change the way people understand an issue or situation for the purpose of changing their actions and expectations in ways that are desirable to the interest group.
What sets propaganda apart from other forms of advocacy is the willingness of the propagandist to change people's understanding through deception and confusion rather than persuasion and understanding.
Propagandists use ordinary language and mannerisms (and clothe their message in face-to-face and audiovisual communications) in attempting to identify their point of view with that of the average person.

The propagandist wants to make the enemy feel he is fighting against soldiers who are "decent, everyday folks" much like himself; this helps to counter themes that paint the opponent as a "bloodthirsty" killer.
For example, the propagandist can use the theme that a satellite force fighting on the side of the enemy is insuring the continued subjugation of its country by helping the common enemy.

This device is used by the propagandist to identify their program by use of "virtue words." Here the appeal is to our emotions of love, generosity, and goodness.
The propagandist is most effective using these devices when the words create devils for us to fight or gods to adore.
To say this is not to condemn emotion, an essential part of life, or to assert that all predetermined ends of propagandist are "bad." What is meant is that the intelligent person does not want propagandists to utilize his emotions, even to the attainment of "good" ends, without knowing what is going on.
