Patent 5249995: Marine drive having two counter-rotating surfacing propellers and dual propeller shaft assembly
Needle bearing 66 is positioned between propeller shaft 42 and bearing support housing 48 in extended bearing support portion 64 such that the propeller shafts are supported over a length to prevent bending of the propeller shafts during the surface operation of the propellers as the propellers strike and pierce the surface of the water.
Propeller 12 is mounted on inner propeller shaft 40 between ring 134 and nut 140 and is engaged forwardly at tapered outer surface 138 of ring 134, and is engaged rearwardly at tapered outer surface 142 of nut 140.
Propeller 14 is mounted on outer propeller shaft 42 between ring 150 and nut 156 and is engaged forwardly at tapered outer surface 154 of ring 150, and is engaged rearwardly at tapered outer surface 158 of nut 156.

 feathering sailing boat propellers QA
When no drive is applied via the propeller shaft and the vessel is under sail, water flow past the propeller blades forces the propeller hub to rotate around the stationary shaft until the blades align with the water flow and cease rotating the hub.
Most current self-feathering propellers have a gear connected to the propeller shaft, the gear and shaft are free to rotate within the hub of the propeller, but are limited in the extend of their travel by some form of limit stops.
This means that once the propeller shaft and blades have rotated to the correct position and up to the limit stops, all engine torque used to physically drive the propeller is transferred directly from the shaft to the propeller hub and blades, not via the gear mechanism.

 Propeller Hub Cracking
The nature of the propeller blade is such that it tends to absorb the greater part of the impact sustained by the propeller, and there is nothing in the literature of propeller design to indicate that the propeller hub is ever considered vulnerable to damage from impact alone.
Propeller manufacturers would be well advised to include such holes in new propellers, and to adopt standards for or at least recognize the relationship of bolt hole and propeller hub or shaft diameters.
Regardless of the reliance of the owner on the judgment of either the shipyard or propeller repair shop, the fact remains that the ultimate responsibility rests with the owner or his representative to require that the necessary inspections be made and to require of the shipyard or propeller shop a report of their findings.

Propeller Modification for Recovery of Decreased Propeller Shaft Speed
In case where a main engine comes to torque-rich condition in spite of applying a margin to propeller speed in the design stage of a propeller, measures to cope with this torque-rich condition are the reconditioning of the main engine, the cleaning of the surface of the hul1,and the cleaning and modification of the propel1-er.
When decreased shaft speed is recovered by the modification of the propeller, the polar moment of inertia of the propeller decreases in case of the method by washback modification on the trailing edge side of the propeller blade under 3.1.
As methods of recovering decreased shaft speed, that is, measures to cope with torque--rich condition, the reconditioning of the main engine, the cleaning of the surface of the hul1, and the cleaning and modification of the propeller to date.Among these methods, the modification of the propeller is commonly adopted, since it is effective and economica1.

The hollow shaft, because it rotates at high speed, must be balanced to prevent vibration and premature bearing failure in the transmission and differential assemblies.
A universal joint acts as a flexible coupling between two shafts and permits one shaft to drive another shaft that is at an angle to it.

 Boat Seem Underpowered?
With a "normal" bronze propeller, a zinc is installed on the stainless steel shaft to serve as a sacrificial anode.
This is necessary since the bronze propeller attached to the stainless steel shaft in a saltwater environment creates a galvanic couple [a very noble metal (shaft) electrically connected to a less noble metal (prop) immersed in an electrolyte (saltwater)].
The addition of the zinc (a metal which is less noble than either the shaft or propeller) to the shaft prevents deterioration of the propeller as the zinc is then sacrificed.

NAUTICALweb - The propeller shaft bracket
The purpose of the propeller shaft bracket is to support the propeller shaft and the propeller.
Section design and the number are determined by the shape of the hull, the length of the propeller shaft and the operational features of the vessel.
A main cause of vibrations in a vessel is the variation of flow on the airscrew disk, so the bracket must not aggravate these conditions; it must, as much as possible, be designed and built to avoid the destructive effects of erosion due to cavitation.

The conduit is formed of split annular rings adapted to be mounted over a propeller shaft, the rings being interconnected to form passages for directing air pressure from the A-bracket through relative rotating seal members and into the body of the propeller.
Second, the propeller and its shaft are subject to axial movement of, in some cases, one and one-quarter inches as well as radial movement.
Finally, the propeller shaft 12 is subjected to bending forces which must be accommodated by the conduit 10.

The tapers of both the shaft and propeller hub should be in contact over 75% of their surface area to transmit power effectively and without undue stress.
In this procedure, it is assumed that the tapers of both the shaft and propeller are made to the same specifications and with a taper of 3/4 inches on diameter per foot.
Install the propeller on the shaft taper(ensure that the propeller is fully seated on the taper) and turn it slowly by hand, one full rotation.

With a mighty bang of the sliding hammer the shaft moved a foot or more, “but what was that sound hitting the bottom of the boat?” “Ah it’s probably the packing gland nut falling off the end of the shaft.” “No, it sounded larger than that,” I said to my friend.
The transmission housing was broken, the transmission gear shaft was pulled completely out of the transmission and to make matters worse, the coupler, still attached to the shaft, was wedged between the subfloor and the bottom of the boat.

The propeller shaft assembly provides a connection through which power is transmitted from the motor to the live axle.
Prop shafts must be of hard material and require a smooth surface if drive shafts sealing rings are used and therefore the material of choice should be VA which is a stainless steel.
Propeller shaft straightness tolerances should also be considered and remain within a thousandths of a centimeter tolerance.

 Definition of Motorboat
A motorboat generally speaking is a vessel other than a sailboat or personal watercraft, propelled by an internal combustion engine driving a jet or a propeller.
A speedboat is a small motorboat designed to move quickly, used in races, for pulling water skiers, as patrol boats, and as fast-moving armed attack vessels by the military.
A direct drive has the powerplant mounted near the middle of the boat with the propeller shaft straight out the back, where a v-drive has the powerplant mounted in the back of the boat facing backwards having the shaft go towards the front of the boat than making a 'V' towards the rear.

Scientists excavating the Hunley's interior on Wednesday got their first look at the Confederate submarine's propeller shaft.

With part of the rear hole in the sub cleaned out, scientists can see the shaft that turned the propeller and another one mounted along the top of the submarine that, somehow, controlled the rudder.
