Reason (program) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Reason can be used either as a complete virtual music studio, or as a collection of virtual instruments to be played live or used with other sequencing software.
Reason has also been praised for its stability, with reports of bugs or crashes very rare -- an asset that is especially important when using the program in live performance.
These shortcomings can all be addressed by connecting Reason via ReWire to another application such as Pro Tools or Logic Pro, allowing Reason to run alongside audio tracks from the hard disk, plugin effects, external instruments, etc. Of course, this adds expense and complication and can compromise stability, too.

 Reason from PropellerHeads
Reason is a new product from the Swedish software company Propellerheads and, after playing with it for a while, I'm ready to build a statue to honor these crafty Swedes.
Reason is a sequencer and virtual rack of outboard gear--synths, samplers, plug-in effects, drum machines and much more--a virtual studio in which you can do everything but record vocals.
Propellerheads is located in faraway Stockholm, but you can learn more about Reason and download a demo version from their web page, www.propellerheads.se.

Review - Propellerhead Reason   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
The 'Reason Watch' progress meter appeared to be moving painfully slowly and it almost seemed that perfectionism would prevent the project from ever seeing the light of day.
But then, out of the blue, came the news we were all waiting for: Reason's beta testers had received their preliminary versions of the software and were scouring the program for bugs and problems prior to release.
Some would even argue that Reason is nothing more than Buzz or Orion with an exorbitant price tag, but we've certainly never heard anything created in Buzz that sounds anywhere near as good as this, and as for the interface, routing and control flexibility, well, it's simply no contest.

 Propellerheads Reason 2.0
Reason is a software program for both Windows and Mac platforms that emulates a rack of electronic synthesizers, samplers, drum machines, FX’s and sequencers.
In Reason 2.0, the main sequencer breaks free from the rack and can expand fully across the screen or be resized and moved, even to a second monitor.
Reason 2.0 of course also comes with plenty of patch and library material for the two new instrument devices.

Reason is a stunningly compelling array of tools, and has a much wider application than one might initially guess, i.e., it’s not just useful for dance music.
Propellerheads decided to emulate the devices that comprise ReBirth not by sampling the audio from the actual devices, but by prying them apart and attempting to model the analog signal flow in software.
Reason 2.5 is a substantial revision (and is free to registered 2.0 users), which both fixes and enhances the previous version.

 Using Propellerheads Reason
What makes Reason such a phenomenal success is that it has gone back to this "control voltage" pre-midi analog technology and developed some extremely accurate models of these synths and added everything that has come after it too.
To be sure, Reason comes with tons of material pre-tweaked and ready to let you construct Trance, DnB and many other flavors of electronica.
While Reason does have a small arrangement grid, the focus is more on the Tweak's themselves, the things that generate the sound.

 Sequencing with Reason (and Logic)
Working with Reason is just like being behind a great vintage pro studio rack that would cost you nearly $25,000 today and be a royal pain to maintain and operate.
Logic senses whether Reason is installed on your system through a file called rewire.dll which is installed with Reason in your windows directory.
Reason checks for a Rewire application when it starts, so we want it to find Logic's Mixer, But before you run Reason, set up the mixer for it.

Reason is now one of the favorite applications among the students.
Reason is a software package that looks, works, and sounds like a rack of electronic music gear.
The biggest advantage of using Reason is that the number of synths, drum machines, and samplers one can use is limited only by their CPU power.

Propellerhead, Digidesign Announce ReWire2 for Pro Tools
Propellerhead Software (booth #6704) and Digidesign (booth #6606, Hall A) announced today a strategic relationship that will result in the development of ReWire2 for Digidesign Pro Tools systems.
ReWire is a cross-application technology to transfer both MIDI and audio seamlessly between Propellerheads' Reason and ReBirth applications and Pro Tools.
When a connection is established, all Reason sampler, synth, drum machine and Dr Rex outputs are connected automatically to Pro Tools; the user can then apply the mixer facilities and effects in Pro Tools to those outputs or record them onto hard disk tracks.

Propellerheads Reason 2.5 user reviews and opinions
Propellerheads should just allow people to write their own synths, like VST but for Reason.
Be warned, if you want Reason to sound good, you have to flip out money for a good DAC, and supportive software like Pro-Tools, etc. I wish the makers of Reason would promote it more as a "plug-in" rather than an application......because it needs a host application/hardware in order to sound good.
Here are the facts reason is a stand alone sequencer, in fact the number one sequencer in the world now mixing in reason can be helped out by a compressor and eq on the way out ouf the mixer.

Reason 2.5 Review. An indepth Review of Propellerheads Latest Music Production Studio
While the Reason 2 program installed as easily as its predecessor, the included 2-volume library was a bit more problematic.
Some of these, particularly the FX, tended to sound a little ‘grainy’ when soloed but usually in the context of a multitrack mix, such artifacts tended to be masked satisfactorily and probably would not adversely affect the sound of a carefully mixed project.
Although part of the original Reason package, the Main Sequencer section has added a few useful editing tools: a 'Zoom' tool to allow you to quickly magnify a sequence for more finite editing control, a 'Line' tool for linear editing of automation and velocity and the 'Eraser' tool for deleting unwanted garbage quickly.
