The Seventy Weeks of Daniel 9
Daniel's prophecy of the Seventy Weeks is usually interpreted by evangelicals in accordance with either of two different major schools of thought.
Seventy weeks are decreed upon your people and upon your holy city, to finish transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most holy.
The clock is necessarily stopped in the middle of the 70th week because the specific accomplishments of the Messiah during the future three and one-half years are among those listed by the angel as occurring during the seventy weeks (9:24).

Daniel's Prophecy of the Seventy Weeks Part 2
Although this prophecy is not the only one from which believers in the Antichrist theory draw their expectations, it is fair to say that it is the key by which the other prophecies are interpreted and their meaning discerned.
Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and anoint the most Holy.
And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.

Daniel's "Seventy Weeks" An Historical and Exegetical Analysis.
The prophecy, then, concerns a definite period of "seven sevens." Seven periods of days or months leave no room for the fulfillment of the details of the prophecy and would render meaningless Jesus' reference to the seventieth seven as yet future (to Him).
In the introduction to the prophecy Gabriel speaks of "your people and your holy city" and of "the holy of holies" (qodesh qadashim), which is clearly and always in the Old Testament a reference to Israel's tabernacle or temple.
The prophecy throughout employs such terms as "Jerusalem," "the city," "the sacrifice and the oblation," and "the many." The people and city under discussion could not be made more obvious; namely, the nation Israel and her capital city, Jerusalem.

 Daniel's Prophecy of Seventy Weeks
To him it was clear that the prophecy meant that it would be seventy weeks of years from the beginning of the rebuilding of Jerusalem until the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.
The fact that this prophecy of seventy weeks was fulfilled to the very day on the Enoch calendar, which has only been understood recently, is a convincing vindication of the book's validity.
That prophecy is not trivial to understand because at first it might appear that the captivity only lasted about 60 years, from 597 BC to 537 BC.

This is made unambiguously clear by the opening words of the prophecy, "Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and thy Holy city..." v.24.
The prophecy itself is divided into three parts; namely seven weeks, sixty-two weeks and one week.
Since the whole prophecy, as already pointed out is specifically Jewish and contains no reference to the church it is sound judgement to believe that the seventieth week will immediately follow the rapture of the church.

 The Seventy Week Prophecy
Seventy Years: By Daniel's reckoning it would be more like 85 years since the desolation began, thus his concern for God to do what he had promised and the search for cause in the sins of his people and himself.
It is not proper to separate the last week from the prophecy to a future date just as the first seven weeks are not to indicate a period unconnected with the 490 years.
With their interpretation the prophecy ceases to be a 490 year prophecy, as the seventieth week is yet to come.

The Great Prophecy of the Seventy Weeks
The word translated "week" is recognized by scholars generally as a generic term simply meaning "a seven." It could be used for seven days, seven months, or as is undoubtedly the case here, seven years, since it was of years that Daniel was thinking.
These seventy sevens, or 490 years, are set apart in the divine reckoning for what the angel calls "the people and thy holy city"--that is, Daniel's people, the Jews, and his holy city, Jerusalem, which was the literal capital of the land of Palestine.
"He shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate" (margin: "desolator").

What is the "Seventy Weeks" Prophecy?
The very scriptures defining the seventy weeks prophecy are referred to by Gabriel as “skill and understanding.” Although the Jews would be restored to their homeland, fulfilling the seventy years prophecy, Gabriel presented to Daniel a prophecy that went far beyond the seventy-year issue.
The term for sixty-two weeks presupposes that this timeframe was preceded by the seven weeks period as presented in verse 25.
We must again examine the first part of Daniel 9:27: “And He shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week He shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease…” This week that the Messiah was to confirm the covenant was the final (seventieth) week.

Please explain the "seventy weeks" prophecy recorded in Daniel 9.
Verses 24-27 state, “Seventy weeks are determined upon your people and upon your holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy.
It is difficult to see the application of the ‘7 weeks’; but the 69 weeks (including the 7) equal 483 days, that is, on the year-day theory, Ezek.
In this prophecy, the Messiah was foretold to be cut off ‘in the midst of the week.’ Wednesday is literally the fourth, or middle day, of a seven-day week.

Further confirmation of the postponement of the seventieth week and of a parenthetical period of history involving further exile and persecution for the Jewish people, is supported by the New Testament's use of the seventy weeks prophecy.
The seventy weeks prophecy of Daniel 9:24-27 was originally regarded by the rabbis as one of the most important predictive texts in the Bible.
With regards the interpretation of the seventy weeks prophecy, the rabbis interpreted the weeks as "weeks of years" and saw it as having prophesied the Roman destruction of Jerusalem.

Meridian Magazine :: Science and Religion :: Daniel's Prophecy Foretells Date of Crucifixion
So last month while writing the article reviewing Newton's interpretation of Daniel's prophecies, it occurred to me to follow up on Newton's suggestion, which he had left as an "exercise for the student," and see just how accurate Daniel's prophecy might really have been, based on the AD 33 crucifixion date.
When one reckons from the day that Ezra states that he left to rebuild Jerusalem (Sat 3 Apr 468 BC), to one of the two possible dates for the Crucifixion (Fri 1 Apr AD 33), one sees that it is nearly exactly seventy weeks of years (490 years) on our calendar.
But when the Enoch calendar is used, which is based on weeks of days and also weeks of years, then the separation of the two dates completes exactly seventy weeks of Enoch years, to the very day.

 Seventy Weeks of Daniel
Whatever understanding at which you ultimately arrive about the prophecy known as "the 70 weeks of Daniel" must be rooted in scripture as opposed to simply or blindly accepting another's echoed viewpoint.
For instance, though not often mentioned that Daniel is the basis of the theory, one often hears the casual mentioning of a "seven year" tribulation period that is to occur prior to the second coming of Messiah Yeshua.
This is because the time period of the "seventy weeks" that Gabriel announced to Daniel, points both to the coming of Messiah (thereby identifying Him), to His atonement for our sins, and many of the events associated with the last days.

"Seventy weeks have been decreed for your people and your holy city, to finish the transgression, to make an end of sin, to make atonement for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most holy place." Daniel 9:24
In Daniel 9:24 we are specifically told that the "seventy weeks" are decreed for Daniel's people the Jews.
The first sixty-nine weeks of years dealt with the Jewish people and God's witness to the world through His "chosen people." The final "Seventieth Week" of seven years will again be focused on God's dealing with Israel and the Judgment of the world through attention getting events.

So the prophecy literally means Seventy "weeks of years." The RSV translation has "weeks of years." "In the 'pseudepigraphical book of Jubilees as well as in the Mishnah, 'shabua' is used to denote a period of seven years" (Commentary on Daniel and Revelation, p.851).

And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined.
And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease..." (Daniel 9:24-27)
It is reasonable to deduce that since the occasion for Daniel's vision was his understanding of the 70 years of Jeremiah, and that since the vision to Daniel concerned a like number of 70 weeks, therefore 70 weeks can equal 70 (x 7) years.
