Prophecy Truths -- Comments on St. Malachy's prophecy of the list of popes
Again the name accords often with some remarkable or rare circumstances in the pope's career: thus Peregrinus apostilicus (pilgrim pope), which designates Pius VI, appears to be verified by his journey when pope into Germany, by his long career as pope, and by his expatriation from Rome at the end of his pontificate.
The present pope (1911) is truly a burning fire of zeal for the restoration of all things in Christ.
Corneius a Lapide refers to this prophecy in his commentary " On the Gospel of St. John " and "On the Apocalypse" and he endeavors to calculate according to it the remaining years of time.

Prophecy on Pope Fulfilled by Eclipses?
In an eerie coincidence, John Paul II was the only known pope to be born on the day of a solar eclipse.
Pope John Paul II will be buried this Friday during another solar eclipse.
The description applied to the 110th pope on his list - John Paul II - is "De Labore Solis" (Of the Solar Eclipse), which seems to add great weight to the validity of St. Malachy’s chilling prophecy: that the next two popes chosen to succeed John Paul II will be the last popes.

Jon Christian Ryter -- The Pope's Funeral And The Malachy Prophecy
Although Malachy entrusted his vision to paper and gave the manuscript to Pope Innocent II for safe keeping, Father Claude Francois Menestrier, a famous 18th century Jesuit, claims the prophecies were actually written in 1590 by Cardinal Simoncelli to influence the election of the Cardinal of his choice as pontiff that year.

E-Mail Responses - Pope John Paul II and the Rose Prophecy
You contend that the late Pope John Paul II is not the 110th Pope on St. Malachy's list, and Pope Benedict XVI is not the 111th (you hold that they are 100 and 101, respectively); however, you still apply to them the characteristics that, on the list of Malachy, belong to Popes not yet installed.
I should point out that in some other prophecies from that period in history, the moon alone (as in the expression "those of the moon" or "from the Land of Moon"), with no reference to which phase the moon is in, was often associated with the Moslems.
The very fact that she does this, according to the prophecy, causes fighting and bloodshed between believers (the ones who witness it) and unbelievers (the ones who don't witness it or, and here I am guessing, those who declare the woman's apparition is a deception by Satan).

 Pittsburgh Catholic Newspaper - Columnists
Apart from the external critique of the “prophecy,” others point to the very subjective nature of the work itself. There are no names given for the popes, only short phrases given in Latin. Those phrases, very general and ambiguous, could be associated with almost anyone.
For example, “pope 263” is described as “pastor et nauta” (shepherd and sailor). This phrase is associated with Pope John XXIII, who was from Venice, a city known for waterways.
“Pope 264” is described as “flos florum” (flower of flowers). Paul VI had fleurs-de-lis on his coat of arms. Pope John Paul II is described as “de labore solis” (of the work of the sun). Those supporting the prophecy claim he was born during a partial eclipse of the sun.

Prophecies of St Malachy---Concerning the Popes
The pope who then follows this choice in the Chair of St. Peter will be the last pope, and after his reign Rome will be destroyed.
Such has been the prophecy of St. Malachy, an Irish bishop who at his death in 1148 A.D. was discovered to have left behind a prophetic list of all future popes beginning with Pope Celestine II, whose papacy began in 1143 A.D. Malachy included a single line in Latin identifying a characteristic of each pope.
The 111th prophecy is "Gloria Olivae" (The Glory of the Olive).

St. Malachy's Prophecy & Pope Pius XIII
Of the 112 Popes described in the prophecy 74 had already reigned when the list was discovered and opponents of the prophecy claim that the descriptions of these are far more exact then those of subsequent Pontiffs.
Proponents of the prophecy however stand on the fact that the prophetic utterances did fit all the Popes after 1590 with uncanny aptness.
Since this Pope was the most gentle and dove-like of men the inscription has presented difficulties which some have tried to circumvent by applying the prophecy to Napoleon at whose hands Pius suffered so much.
