Proscenium - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A proscenium theatre is a theatre space whose primary feature is a large archway (the proscenium arch) at or near the front of the stage, through which the audience views the play.
The main stage is the space behind the proscenium arch, often marked by a curtain which can be lowered or drawn closed.
The space in front of the curtain is called the "apron." Proscenium stages range in size from small enclosures to several stories tall.

Proscenium arch - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The proscenium arch developed in seventeenth century theatres, alongside the development of illusionistic scenery.
Throughout much of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, proscenium arch theatres were the norm.
Proscenium arch theatres have fallen out of favour because they perpetuate the fourth wall concept within theatre, which implies that the characters performing on stage are doing so in a four-walled environment, with the "wall" facing the audience being invisible.

The proscenium arch theatre (from Latin pro scaenium, 'in front of the stage') is a form of theatre in which the stage is separated from the audience by an arch (the proscenium arch) behind which the action is staged.
The arch in such theatres is traditionally filled with curtains which part (or rise) at the beginning of the play to reveal a scene which is viewed as though the fourth wall of a room had been removed.
The proscenium arch stage has been attacked by theatre radicals for imposing both physical and metaphysical narrowness of vision on those who write for it, act in it, and watch plays in it.

A Proscenium Theater is a theater space whose primary feature is a large archway (the proscenium arch) at or near the front of the stage, through which the audience views the play.
This design was by far the most common for theater spaces in the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries.
In general practice, a theater space is referred to as a "proscenium" any time the audience directly faces the stage, with no audience on the any other sides, even if there is not a formal archway over the stage.

Writing for Vaudeville - Chapter III - The Vaudeville Stage and Its Dimensions (by Brett Page)
The frame through which the audience views the stage is the “proscenium arch.” Flat against the stage side of the arch run the “house curtain” and the asbestos curtain that are raised at the beginning and lowered at the end of the performance.
Back of the proscenium arch–four feet or more behind it–you have noticed canvas-covered wings painted in neutral-toned draperies to harmonize with every sort of curtain, and you have noticed that they are pushed forward or drawn back as it is found necessary to widen or make narrow the stage opening.
A proscenium arch was all the scenery usually thought necessary in these outdoor performances, and when the plays were given indoors even the most realistic scenery would have been of little value in the rush-lit semi-darkness.

All audience members are seated on one side of the arch, like in a movie theatre, and all actors and scenic spectacle are framed within the arch or just in front of it.
