In small hospitals, the prosector is a Board-certified pathologist, an MD or DO (osteopath) who has undergone a four- or five-year residency in the specialty of pathology, specifically anatomic pathology.
The prosector checks to make sure that the body is that of the patient named on the permit by checking the toe tag or patient wristband ID. Abnormalities of the external body surfaces are then noted and described, either by talking into a voice recorder or making notes on a diagram and/or checklist.

Prosector's wart - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Prosector's wart or tuberculosis verrucosa cutis (TVC), is a rash of small, red papular nodules in the skin that may appear 2-4 weeks after inoculation by Mycobacterium tuberculosis in a previously infected and immunocompetent individual.
It is so called because it was a common occupational disease of prosectors, the preparators of dissections and autopsies.
Reinfection by tuberculosis via the skin, therefore, can result from accidental exposure to human tuberculous tissue in physicians, pathologists and laboratory workers; or to tissues of other infected animals, in veterinarians, butchers, etc. Other names given to this form of skin tuberculosis are anatomist's wart and verruca necrogenica (literally, generated by corpses).

The prosector may leave before the final body preparation is completed, but he is to remove the protective clothing before leaving the morgue premises, and all protective clothing is to be placed in the plastic bags for proper disposal.

Unrealistic limits or conditions are occasionally placed upon the prosector with respect to the length of time permitted for the examination or the circumstances under which an examination is allowed.
When conditions are imposed, the prosector should be able to refuse to perform a compromised examination and should prepare a report explaining this position.
If the prosector decides to proceed with the examination notwithstanding difficult conditions or circumstances, he or she should include in the autopsy report an explanation of the limitations or impediments.

NLRB, 522 U.S. The preference for the conclusions of the autopsy prosector has all of the true-doubt rule's vices without its redeeming virtue (for the true-doubt rule at least required true doubt, an equipoise in the evidence, while the preference for the prosector's views can overcome all of the scientifically valid evidence in the record).
Preferring the prosector's conclusion, for no better reason than that the prosector wields the scalpel, is about as sensible as preferring in an antitrust case the conclusions of whatever expert devoted the most time to preparing his report.
Railey is directly on point; it holds that the alj may not automatically credit the conclusions of an autopsy prosector but must supply a valid rationale for adopting them.
