Proslogium - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Proslogium, also known as the Discourse on the Existence of God, is an attempt by the medieval cleric Anselm to prove beyond contention the existence of God.
The Proslogium is the source for Anselm's famous ontological argument for the existence of God--that is, the argument in favor of God's existence by definition.
While opinions concerning the ontological argument vary widely (and have from the moment the Proslogium was written), it is generally agreed that the argument is most convincing to Anselm's intended audience: that is, Christian believers seeking a rational basis for their belief in God.

He finally named it Proslogium, that is, A Discourse.
But when I wished to exclude this thought altogether, lest, by busying my mind to no purpose, it should keep me from other thoughts, in which I might be successful; then more and more, though I was unwilling and shunned it, it began to force itself upon me, with a kind of importunity.
And that this might be done more fitly, I named the first, Monologium, that is, A Soliloquy; but the second, Proslogium, that is, A Discourse.

However that may be, we hardly know what to admire most, --St. Anselmus's broad and profound conception, or the sagacity of his opponent who, in the seclusion of his cell, anticipates the Transcendental Dialectic of Kant.
The drift of this reasoning is, according to Anselm (Proslogium, C. 2), as follows: `It is one thing to say that a thing is in the understanding, and quite another to perceive that it exists.

He was born in Italy about 1033, and entered the monastery of Bec in Normandy to study under Stephen Lanfranc, whom he succeeded in office, first as prior of Bec, and later as Archbishop of Canterbury.
The success of his work may be gauged by the fact that many Christians today not only accept his way of explaining the Atonement, but are simply unaware that there is any other way.

While acknowledging the force of these arguments, St. Anselm (as he tells us in the prooemium to the Proslogium) began to inquire whether an argument could not be found which would of itself be sufficient to prove the existence of God.
It is known as the ontological argument, and is as follows: We define God as a being than which nothing greater can be thought.
The résumé just given is a brief form of the argument as it occurs in the third chapter of the Proslogium.

It was likewise during this period that he composed some of his philosophical and theological works, notably, the "Monologium" and the "Proslogium".
His position was a stage in the process and it is significant that one of his biographers, John of Salisbury, was among the first to find the true solution.
Anselm's chief achievement in philosophy was the ontological argument for the existence of God put forth in his "Proslogium".

 St Anselm of Canterbury, Proslogium
St Anselm’s Proslogium is best known as the source of the ontological argument for God’s existence.
The Proslogium also contains Anselm’s clarifications of some problematic points of theology, including divine omnipotence (Chapter VII), impassibility (Chapter VIII), and justice (Chapters IX-XI).
The penultimate chapter is a meditation on the great joys of heaven (Chapter XXV), and how they will be multiplied by one’s knowledge that a multitude of others, each of whom one will love as perfectly as oneself, are also undergoing these joys, which are also being multiplied in this way.

By the end of book Anselm has found what he was looking for, now he just needs to pursue it.
I am quite convinced that Anselm could have been one of the smartest debaters in history, and while perhaps was not as nimble as Socrates, at least he did not twist words to make himself feel better about himself.
Anselm’s Proslogium is probably my favorite reading of the year, and I loved talking about him in class.

Although I have taught theology for 33 years, I was not a voracious reader as a young man. After I became a Christian I was and am, of course, profoundly influenced by the Christian classics-- Augustine, Aquinas, Luther, Calvin, and others-but mostly at second hand, through modern teachers and writers.
One book I did pore over, however, was the Proslogium of Anselm of Canterbury (1033-1109).
The Proslogium is utterly unique: a profound rethinking of the existence-of-God question, but also a new type of philosophical thought, informed by a remarkable Christian epistemology.

I have always found that the Proslogium that contains Anselm's Ontological Proof of the existence of God ("God is that, than which nothing greater can be concieved") was a better case for agnosticism than theism.
For more discussion of the Proslogium, see here.
Agnosticism is not the position of a coward, although I dare say there are cowards who are agnostics.

Anselm, Archbishop of Canterbury, philosopher, father of scholastism, and doctor of the highly-esteemed Ontological Argument has in this work (Proslogium, Monologium, Cur Deus Homo, and Reply to Gaunilo)decribed and defended the nature of the most Trascendent Being in a profound yet simplistic manner.
He begins his treatise stating that "God is greater than that of which can be conceived." While at the same time he emphasizes that we must not be intimidated by God's incomprehensiblity, but rather that we are reconciled to the Divine Knowledge by a means of simply believing in Him.
