Troy, N.Y. — Garnet Douglass Baltimore, a distinguished civil engineer and landscape designer, who was the first African-American to earn a bachelor’s degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, will be celebrated on Sept. 8, when the city of Troy ceremonially renames a portion of 8th Street in his honor.
Today — more than a century after its conception — Prospect Park is still used by members of the Troy community.
Baltimore also lent his talents and expertise beyond Troy, including supervising the extension of the “mud lock” on the Oswego Canal, acting as assistant engineer and surveyor on the Erie Canal, and leading a preliminary survey party for the 56-mile Granville and Rutland Railroad.

John Tavares who is only a 1990, and an Elite Prospect Showcase Alumni Team Ontario member had a special prevision in the 2005 OHL Priority Selection and was selected number 1 overall by the Oshawa Generals.

Back in 1908, a Troy booster by the name of Bert E. Lyon floated the idea of a Troy Week to celebrate the city and its citizens.
During the evening fireworks lit up Prospect Park and Rensselaer Park in the "Burgh." The city was decorated with arches across the streets, colonnades, flags, bunting, posters and more.
We could have parades with floats representing past and present industries of Troy, and fireworks at Prospect Park would be visually appealing.
