Prosumer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Prosumer refers to one of two possible portmanteaus formed by contracting either the word producer or professional with the word consumer.
Further, prosumer has taken on conflicting spins: the business sector sees the prosumer as a means of offering a wider range of products and services whereas activists see the prosumer as having greater independence from the mainstream economy.
Indeed, the more consumer-oriented prosumer spin is irrelevant to many people with diminished disposable income caused by various economic trends such as globalization, automation, and wealth concentration.

Are you a prosumer? Take this hand quiz - The Boston Globe - Boston.com - Business
Prosumers are passionate about the technology they use for their creative pursuits.
This kind of prosumer doesn't necessarily earn money by making music, videos, or photos, but is still willing to invest in more serious hardware and software than the typical dabbler, and spend more time using it.
Prosumers are usually space-constrained, pressing spare rooms of their homes into double duty.

Construction: The Prosumer machines are built to last and have all of the key components to protect the boiler from overheating and allow you to leave it on all day.

 TheTransitioner.org : prosumer
"Prosumer" is a word that Alvin Toffler coined on his book "the Third Wave" to describe a more fitting relationship that individuals should have to the economy.
Prosumer is a good buzzword to awaken people's awareness: at "clubes de trueque"(barter clubs) in Argentina this word "prosumer"(in fact "prosumidor/dora" in Spanish) is frequently used to make people aware of the fact that they are both producers and consumers at the same time.
Prosumer is but two of the three characteristics of all individuals engaged in economic acts.

Advantages of Digital SLRs DSLRs versus Compact Prosumer Cameras
A prosumer camera is one that has a full range of manual controls, an accessory shoe for an external flash, and mounting threads for filters and additional lenses.
A prosumer camera doesn't have a moving mirror, which is a source of vibrations and noise in DSLRs, and therefore it can be used at a lower shutter speed and in locations where silence is important.
Many prosumer cameras have zoom lenses of a large aperture, such as f/2, which are either extremely expensive, or just plain unavailable for DSLRs.

 Turns of Phrase: Prosumer
prosumer has been taken up by some marketing people, but remains limited in its application.
The second usage describes a purchaser of technical equipment who wants to obtain goods of a better quality than consumer items, but can’t afford professional items (older terms for goods of this intermediate quality are semi-professional and industrial quality).
Prosumers of this sort are famed for their enthusiasm for new products and their tolerance of flaws and, from the marketing point of view, have much in common with early adopters.

"Prosumer" was first coined by alvin toffler in his oft-cited book "the third wave" in 1980, as someone who is simultaneously producer and consumer.
prosumers first and foremost create goods for their own use, the creative process losing interest in the current mainstream and claiming back independence, perhaps satisfying or due to an inner urge to produce non-standard, handmade goods...

 PortersMessageBoard - Viewing Topic: Prosumer?
Prosumer is a term I have seen many times used in conjunction with digital cameras.
Believe me, just as Michael Quinion wrote, the term "Prosumer" was coined as the high end camera, just as capable of capturing images as well as a SLR but just doesn't have the ability to switch lenses.
I was not trying to equate the term prosumer with snobs but was rather trying to say the term is used more frequently by snobs, whether the category is appropriate to the camera or not.

As with most prosumer machines, the La Valentina contains an E-61 brew group that features a thermal siphon hot water circulation that is second to none.

 Quixtar Blog: Define Prosumer
From the way it was used I assumed that a prosumer was someone who bought products from Quixtar instead of a traditional retail outlet.
Word spy's definition "A consumer who is an amateur in a particular field, but who is knowledgeable enough to require equipment that has some professional features ("professional" + "consumer")." was the only use I knew of the word prior to the phenomenom of the IBO usage.
The only problem is is that IBO's don't create or produce any goods, they only buy them from what they believe is "their company." When all is said and done, they are still consumers of Quixtar products and employees of the Quixtar company.

Macsimum News - The prosumers are coming -- and Apple will benefit
The term prosumer is a merging of the words “producer” and “consumer.”; Prosumers are “engaged in a creative process of producing a product and service portfolio with guidance from trusted friends—the companies they’ve trusted for years and the new ones they’ve come to love,” according to Blinkoff.
With prosumers, people actively engage in a “productive and consumptive activity that clearly connects the actors to membership in larger social circles,” with the same rules applying to more mainstream products.
I was under the distinct impression that “Prosumer”, as it is most commonly used today, was a blend of “Professional”; and “Consumer”;...

Despite costing more than an entry-level SLR, a prosumer camera cannot seriously be considered "better", be it in image quality or ease of focusing or handling.
Still, the prosumer digicam is a market on its own, designed for advanced users as much as amateurs (informed or not), or even professionals who want high resolution from a camera that is versatile and easy to control.
Prosumer digicams certainly have a convenience that is lacking in the SLR.

Comparing a Prosumer Digital Camera and a Digital SLR, in the Photography > category, on danandsherree.com   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
By Dan, written on March 12, 2005 at 4:43 PM Updated on August 14, 2005 at 4:23 PM For those with an interest in film photography and film SLR cameras, most will consider a digital SLR as a replacement.
A prosumer-grade digital camera can provide many traditional SLR advantages (several exposure, focus and drive modes; external flash; and medium-to-large aperture lenses, to name a few) which can be combined with smaller digital camera advantages (smaller size, lighter weight, LCD screen for shooting, etc).
What follows is a comparative look at the usability and image quality of a Nikon Coolpix 5700 prosumer digital camera and a Canon EOS 20D digital SLR.

A prosumer digicam or a dSLR?
With prosumer EVF digicams hitting 9 megapixels (like the Fuji FinePix S9000, pictured) and prices for low-end DSLRs falling into the $600s, the two variations are competing for the wallets of well-heeled shooters ready to move beyond point-and-shoots.
Having recently moved from a prosumer digicam (Sony DSC-F717) to a dSLR myself (Nikon D70) these are issues that drove my own decision to switch.
It takes time to get comfortable with a new camera, however, and there are several things about the way the Sony handled that I miss: the live histogram; its ability to hang over the shoulder and sit comfortably under the arm; the swivel body; the macro capability.

What is a 'prosumer' camera? (Anders Jacobsen's blog)
"Prosumer" is a word often used about cameras (or other gear) that is targetted for sale to people on the border line between being consumers and professional users.
Examples include the Canon EOS 10D / 300D digital SLR cameras (and Nikon 's D70/D100 etc): these are cameras that are priced for consumers (or at least for very interested hobbyists) and yet could easily be used professionally due to high quality / large number of features / expandability and so on.
[A prosumer is] a purchaser of technical equipment who wants to obtain goods of a better quality than consumer items, but can’t afford professional items (older terms for goods of this intermediate quality are semi-professional and industrial quality).

In other words, the DSR 390 has the look and feel and features of a broadcast camcorder; the prosumer camcorders feel as though their "professional" features are add-ons.

Agenda Inc. Live Feed - 9/11 and the age of the prosumer   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
Twenty-five years after Alvin Toffler coined the term "Prosumer" in his book The Third Wave, Consumer Anthropologist Robbie Blinkoff says the Prosumer is officially here to stay and that this holiday season is their coming of age.
Prosumers are engaged in a creative process of producing a product and service portfolio with guidance from trusted friends - the companies they've trusted for years and the new ones they've come to love.
Certainly Toffler's prophesy was becoming a reality with mass computer consumption, Internet, Cable TV and digital technologies available, but Blinkoff, a Principal Anthropologist at Context-Based Research Group in Baltimore, says something dramatic happened to the Prosumer landscape that sped up the evolutionary process.

Also, the zoom is activated on the lens itself unlike most prosumer cameras that have a left/right knob that controls the zoom.
