Garden Compass - The Garden Experts
Originally from Gondwanaland, these alien-looking plants belong to a family (Proteacae) named for the Greek god Proteus, who could change his shape at will and had the gift of prophesy.
He had researched South Africa’s Fynbos, where many species of the Proteacae family were endemic, and he discovered that in Southern California, just north of Escondido in San Diego County, there was an environment that just about replicated their home territory.
He found that the most important consideration for successfully growing proteas was to provide a well-drained acidic soil.

The highest peak in this park is Bluff Knoll, about 1000 metres, and the fungus is present along the entire track to the summit and on the summit.
There is also a suspicion that the fungus can be moved by kangaroo (or less likely by bird), as there are photos I've seen of an isolated patch of the fungus killing highly susceptible Proteacae plants kilometres from the next nearest known infection.
The state's eucalyptus hardwood Jarrah forests are also highly susceptible to the disease, from which the original local name Jarrah dieback originated.
