Indigenous Populations and Protected Areas in Queensland, Australia
The Government of Queensland, Australia, is engaging in ways to achieve this through a new system of protected areas and a process which returns ownership to indigenous populations in Cape York Peninsula, one of the world’s largest and relatively untouched wilderness areas.
Demonstrating how protected areas contribute to human wellbeing and linking them with the Millennium Development Goals is the particular challenge of the Ad Hoc Open Ended Working Group on Protected Areas of the Convention on Biological Diversity, said Nik Lopoukhine, Chair of the IUCN World Commission on Protected Areas in his keynote presentation.

Thailand’s protected areas already form one of the largest systems in the world as a proportion of national territory, and the government plans to increase the protected area estate to 25 per cent over the next decade.
An initial step is properly valuing protected areas in economic terms and reflecting those values in national and sector budgets and in the overall flow of investment going to conservation.
Protected areas need to be planned and managed as important components of the wider development landscape.

It proposes practical measures and solutions to overcome the weaknesses with a focus on strengthening the relationships between protected areas and local communities and application of the “user pays” principle to all development sectors that receive benefits from protected areas so that payments go to maintaining the resource base.
In order to strengthen the role of protected areas in economic development, the National Report has proposed some recommendations on the use of financial and planning tools, the improvement of cooperation and collaboration between related sectors and levels, and on the legal and institutional frameworks relevant to the protected area system.
