Tasmania was once inhabited only by an indigenous population, the Tasmanian Aborigines, and evidence indicates their presence in the territory, later to become an island, at least 35 000 years ago (rising sea levels cut Tasmania off from mainland Australia about 10,000 years ago).
Tasmania is a rugged island of temperate climate, so similar in some ways to pre-industrial England that it was referred to by some English colonists as 'a Southern England'.

Announcing the new protected zones Friday, Minister for the Environment and Heritage Senator Ian Campbell said about one-third of the world's marine protected areas are now in Australian waters.
The rest of the protected area is designated as multiple use zones where oil and gas exploration, development and associated activities such as laying of pipelines.
All or part of five of the Marine Protected Areas are zoned Multi-Use Zone B which permits mining exploration and development activities, recreational and charter fishing, shipping and general transit, scientific research and commercial tourism, but not commercial fishing.

The fishing industry has welcomed plans to establish a new marine protected area in the state's south east.
There are seven marine protected areas around Tasmania, ranging from 45 hectares at Tinderbox to nearly 80 thousand hectares at Macquarie Island.
He says any plan which has a limited impact on fishing areas will be embraced by the fishing industry, but also pointed to moves within the State Government toward a structural adjustment (compensation) plan for fishers who do lose income through loss of fishing area.
