Without ambiguity, it shows that the proportion of the protected forest areas from the total forest area in Finland is the highest in Europe and the level of protection is the strictest in Europe.
The proportion of protected forests is already 18 percent of the forests on the Northern boreal vegetation zone of Finland.
The status of protection in Finnish Lapland and its vegetation zones is exceptionally good, because 43 percent of the forests in the Metsä-Lappi zone and 51 percent of forest land owned by Metsähallitus in the same area are protected.

The Mediterre Parks Fair is an annual event dedicated to parks and natural protected areas throughout the Mediterranean and organized by the Puglia Regional Government, the Italian Ministry of the Environment and Federparchi.
The Mediterranean protected areas are not a natural landscape as the wildness parks of North America and Africa, but are shaped by many years of human activities such as farming, hunting, livestocks, and mining.
At the Mediterre Fair, there was a session devoted to eco-agriculture and protected areas in which an initiative supported by the Italian Ministry of the Environment, Federparqui, Legambiente and the ONG Slow Food was showcased.

Some countries have suggested that most or all of their forests fall under the protected area status as a consequence of general forestry legislation, but a number of others have held to more traditional views of protection and have included in their reporting only the legally designated protected areas which met international standards.
The same protected forests map was then overlaid on the FRA 2000 global ecological zones map, and statistics on the proportion of forests inside protected areas were generated for each ecological zone.
The total extent of forests in protected areas was estimated at 479 million hectares, which is equivalent to 12.4 percent of the world's forest area.
